I need help processing the procedure for the Luke Skywalker Co-Pilot card.

Does it only work if I don't roll any hit results on my attack roll or does it also apply to modified attack rolls (focus results changed to HITS). Or, does it actually refer to if I actually hit my opponent after they unsuccessfully defend using their defense dice and I earn a hit?

If, after modifying all dice and your opponent was able to cancel all of your hits, then you can reroll the attack dice via the Luke Skywalker crew card and use the ability listed on the card. If you score even one hit with your first attack you use whatever ability the pilot of the ship in question has and not Skywalker's.

The rules for being "hit by an attack" are clearly defined on page 12 of the rulebook. In short, your second description is the correct one.
