Alien languages

By Ineti, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I didn't see anything in the EotE core book's index, so...how are alien languages handled in the game? I know the alien species listed in the book list their own language and talk about whether they're able to speak Basic or some form of Basic.

However, how many languages can a PC learn and speak? Unlimited according to character background? Is there a limit? Is it assumed a non-Basic speaking PC can still somehow communicate with their fellow PCs?

How are you handling languages in game?

The rules suggest that languages are never an issue - unless a particular language is supposed to be a sticking point for a reason. So it's OK if your PCs each speak a dozen languages of common spacefaring species. However, if they come into contact with an isolated species or catch a recording of an ancient people, they should not assume that they understand the language.

There is a very large sidebar on page 44 of the core rulebook that discusses how languages are handled in-game.

Basically, unless it would make a thematic and fun plot point (like, for example, the character from KOTOR needing to purchase a 'protocol droid' to communicate with Sand People) just say "so and so bellows in Huttese" and then talk in whatever language you and your friends speak. XD

"I am C-3PO human-cyborg relations. I am fluent in over six million forms of communication."

"He doesn't like you. I don't like you either."

It seems that when ever there is a need of understanding alien communications someone is able to translate. I would allow everyone to speak in their usual language, with the odd alien word or burble thrown in for effect.

When it is important that no-one understand the alien, then no-one does.

Thanks! I hadn't seen that yet in my skim of the book.
