Balance of the Force. What do we think?

By player1041350, in Star Wars: The Card Game

So we now have an idea of how multiplayer is going to work. What do we all think?

I like the idea of a 'uber-deck' that a team can fight against. This could make it really fun to play against. But I like the 2 v 2 more from what they are saying. Being able to pass cards across could be good. Especially if they are already out in play - It doesn't mention whether they have to be from your hand I don't think.

Image, if you were playing Jedi and your partner rebels. You could play single faction decks and still have the possibility to field both factions.

Can't wait. Looks exciting!

2v2 sounds really interesting. Hope to hear more about that soon.

Okay, I'm more excited than I already was.

It looks like there might be problems with switching from one format to another though. Good single player decks probably won't be as effective in 2v2 as your average deck designed for the format, and vice-versa. And they make it sound like the Challenge decks are pre-built, so you'll want to have decks specifically built to play against each one.

I think they're all really cool ideas, but it kinda screws you if your game night plans don't pan out... Plan on playing 2v2 but someone doesn't show up and you don't have the right decks to play 1v2. Plan on playing 1v2 and somebody doesn't show up, you don't have the right decks for 1v1.

Unless you're Mr. Suitcase. ;)

Looks like we'll only have to buy one of these at least.

I like being adaptable... so I guess this means it is best to bring your entire collection of cards with you. Also means that I may have to write down my decks so I can remember them in the case that I have to switch things around at the last second. As far as I know, my local venue doesn't have a following for this game. I wish there was one though.

Sure, provided we get 2x of each objective set in that expansion.

Actually, on the "About" page for this deluxe expansion it says the objectives are all "Limit 1 per deck" so there will be no need to buy more than one. Which I think is GREAT! Especially since there's so much in this expansion you wouldn't want duplicated.

The six affiliations of Star Wars: The Card Game each gain a new objective set from Balance of the Force. These objective sets are each “Limit 1 per objective deck” and introduce powerful new units – or new versions of powerful units already in the game. Additionally, they offer players interesting new options for both multiplayer games and head-to-head matches.

The preview explicitly says thats the case.

Missed that. Well, that's a bit of a relief. I'm unable to grab the latest Force Pack and the 2x of Edge of Darkness for the time being.

1v1 will probably remain my standard mode, but this will open up some options for playgroups with 3-4 people to do something different and include everyone. I know for MtG at least I would often get together with groups of 4 people and play giant multiplayer games (EDH or otherwise).

Looks like Mara Jade will be released in this expansion.

Looks like Mara Jade will be released in this expansion.

:D Yup.

Looks like Mara Jade will be released in this expansion.

Yeah that was the first thing that made me happy. In my opinion her and Thrawn are the best EU characters ever.

It looks like this version of Mara might only be usable in 2v2 games. We're only shown the objective itself, but its text would effectively be blank in 1v1. But given the flavor of her being a secret weapon employed by the Emperor to assist the Empire's rule, and the way the common reserve mechanic is explained to work, this makes sense.

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that, during Wizards' production of their Star Wars Miniatures game, they were given explicit instructions from LFL to include at least one version of Darth Vader and/or Anakin Skywalker in each of the game's expansion lineups. Seeing that we're already getting a third version of Darth Vader in this set (middle card cluster), I wonder if Fantasy Flight is perhaps working under a similar clause, i.e. "Darth Vader must appear in each cycle of Force Packs and each deluxe expansion."

I doubt FFG has been given a directive to create multiple versions of certain characters. I think it's just a case of wanting to create multiple versions of these super-iconic characters that can fit different decks and playstyles. They did the same with the Game of Thrones card game, where some characters have even 4 or 5 versions.

Also, Mara Jada was spoiled on the Balance of the Force sub-site, in case you didn't see it:

I would hope that at least 1 version of Mara Jade will be available in 1v1 games, whether it is from this expansion or a future one. Considering how she is shown in the art of at least 2 cards in the game already. (Force Stasis and The Hand's Blessing) My hope is that we will eventually see a Dark Side as well as a Light Side version of her, since she is quite an important character in the EU and does quite a lot on both sides of the conflict.

Mara is a normal objective set and can be used in normal decks.

I saw some of the cards and my jaw hit the floor until I realized that they could not be used in 1v1 competitive play.

I like that there are multiple multiplayer styles!

@the person who talked about having too many decks, etc. I don't think that it will be a big deal. With this game it is pretty easy to do relatively major deck modifying on the fly. Build your decks for each variant, remember or write down what is in them, and just bring those cards; you don't have to bring your whole collection.

Mara Jade is definitely usable in 1v1. Whether her objective set is strong enough to show up in competitive play remains to be seen.

  • 6 new objective sets for play in any format

Also, I think "The Rancor Pit" sounds like an excellent name for a shady bar or nightclub.

So the question is, can any of these sets be used in 1v1 mode? If not I think i will have to skip it. I have a hard enough time trying to find one person to play the game with. Also some of these cards are ridiculous. I don't know if i am going to pick this one up yet. Time will tell.

As has been said several times in this thread and in the article and on the products website, Yes. The 6 new objective sets are Limit of 1 per objective deck but usable in the standard game.

Excited for the raid decks and the team play. Was not expecting team play at all.

I guess I was confused about the 3 v 1 games with the Luke and Death Star II. I hadn't read the about page at that point. Suddenly my interests in this expansion has peaked. Now I must know more!
