Cost of Specializations

By FreeXenon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am curious what you all think about the cost specializations... For me they seem really, really expensive. The first one is either 20 or 30 points, which is one or two full adventures worth of experience with nothing to show for it, but opening up a door. =O

Purchasing of a specialization is a HUGE XP set back. When looking at it the cost appears too big to me. What do you think?

I am looking at 3 possible specializations for my cat burglar styled Thief - 1 of which is an in-career specialization:

Slicer: this is the primary one I want mostly for the computer talents

Scoundrel - I only like this for the skills: cool, charm, and ranged light; the talents are similar to the Thief's, which are just OK to me.

Assassin: I am considering this only to give me more combat ability, since there is tremendous skill overlap here with Thief.

Unless I'm mistaken you get one specialization for free. So I think the extra ones should be very very expensive. You aren't an expert at something until you've done it for 10000 hours or something like that.

It is a long term investment.

You get additional career skills which will allow you to save 5 points each time you purchase one that previously was not.

You get access to a huge number of talents.

They can get expensive, but they are worth it if it fits your character development. If you just want one of the new career skills, and can get the talents otherwise...maybe not.

They really aren't all that expensive. You will only become an expert in that specialization once you invest the XP into the specific skills and talents.

So the end result is 60XP (Slicer is non-Smuggler) in exchange for a 5XP discount per rank on 4-8 different skills, AND a wider selection of Talents, some of which overlap to greater effect than similarly priced higher tier talents that a single Spec player would eventually be buying.

I think it's fine where it's at.

Definitely should be expensive.

I believe I read in the core book that the Gm should reward players with 20 xp after every session, plus additional xp for completing goals (Please verify. I don;t have the book in front of me currently). Taking that into consideration, specialties are relatively cheap.

Exactly.

Perhaps it is just me. =)

We had our first session yesterday!

15 - 20 xp is what I think it says.

I assuming that we will get near the 15 xp per session.

It was 10 xp recommended for the beginner game, which might explain some of the reaction to costs. For the core rules 20 sounds about right for a full successful session.

20 per session seems pretty high to me. In a long-term game characters might get too fat too soon.

10 - 15 per session. With a session being 4 - 6 hours of game time. So, if you go for longer sessions, then XP rewards should be higher.

So about 5 xp/2 hours on average. That's not too bad. When I saw 20 xp I was thinking that was for a 4 hour session.

Considering there is a whopping 300XP/talent tree, not including skills and force powers for the FSE, 20 XP plus a few here and there for good RPing and stuff a session for a long-term campaign that meets once a week or so isn't unreasonable. I mean, if you played for a whole year every single week, you'd get about 1000 XP, which makes you pretty much makes you a certified badass. But, most campaigns won't run that long. If yours will, then dial back the XP numbers to match it.

10 xp standard

+5 xp for playing your motivation

+5 xp for doing something extraordinary in relation to an objective.

I'd say 10-20 xp per session with the average being around 15 xp

I am only going to award motivation xp if they actually do well to show off their motivation.

Also the +5 for a scenario objective will be hard to get. They will have to really shine and do well to earn that. Getting 20 xp should be rare. Getting 15 should be fairly normal and only getting 10 shouldn't happend that often.

Yea, I am planning on 15 XP and we are playing every other weekend.

I had thought of suggesting that as a benefit of purchasing a specialization you gain 5 XP to buy a skill or talent from the new specialization. At least that way, when you purchase the specialization, you actually get something to show that you have been training and learning and not just have a door open for you, plus it softens the price a little bit.

I had a GM that made us vote at the end of a session to see which PC earned the "Session XP award". Something like that could be implemented at your own discretion to perhaps award that extra 5xp and give somebody that edge to 20 for that night's play.

Not a bad idea for a VIP award, although there could be bad blood if the same person earns it every session.
