Discipline confusion...

By TalkingMuffin, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

On page 111, top left for the Discipline skill it reads, "Discipline is often used to oppose another's actions-where there is no roll-so it may not always be possible to generate an extra success. In situations where an extra success can be earned, one may be spent to downgrade a *Challenge Die* to a *Difficulty Die* on the character's next turn."

This confuses me. Could anyone give an example? Thanks!

Discipline is a social / mental defense vs coercion, etc. when rolled as a defense, extra successes just protect you better. However, if the gm calls for a discipline roll for, say, fear effects or morale or whatnot, the extra successes then make you more effective on your next action, helping you overcome difficulty.

Discipline die pools are most often converted to a difficulty pool.

For instance, if I have GGY in Discipline, and an enemy tries to interrogate me, they would have to add PPR to their die pool. (Converting my two green dice to purple, and my one yellow die to red.)

You pretty much never roll discipline to resist Coercion, Intimidation, etc. You just use it as a passive pool of defense dice. These get added to the pool of whatever skill is being used against your PC..

Since you rarely roll discipline, you rarely get successes. :)

Right, passive defense. Thanks. Still in a World of Darkness mindset.

Thanks!

It has been suggested (I believe in the Core Rulebook, but also in an episode of the Order 66 Podcast) that the Players should roll whenever possible.

Therefore, you could have a PC roll a Discipline check using the NPC's Coercion skill to set the difficulty (instead of the GM rolling what amounts to the exact opposite roll).

Since most rolls in EotE are made in the open anyway, this will give the players a sense of empowerment, as they're in control of those rolls!

(Not suggested for Combat skills though...)

Just realize that the GY dice aren't exactly balanced by the PR dice. The GY dice come up slightly better on a one-to-one basis when compared to the PR. So it does make a difference as to which side is rolling which dice for which skill.

Basically the dice favor whomever is rolling the GY when the count of the dice is balanced.

Which is another reason to let the Players roll whenever possible, as they are the heroes (although heroes may be a stretch depending upon the campaign--perhaps I should just say "protagonists") of the stories being told using EotE! :)
