"Weighted Head" melee weapon attachment question.

By TalkingMuffin, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The "Weighted Head" attachment for bludgeoning weapons takes 2 HP but none of those weapons have HP in order to modify them. Am I missing something here? Kooky. :)

Isn't a Force Pike a bludgeoning weapon? It has 3 HPs.

Pretty sure it's a slashing weapon like the rest of the vibro set.

I always considered it a bludgeoning weapon. But reading up on it on wookiepedia it seems its more of a piercing weapon; its referred to as a spear in one sentence. Oh well. Then the weighted head is useless unless its cost is reduced to 1, at which point a rank in the Tinkerer talent should suffice.

It's supposed to apply to brass knuckles as well, so I'm hoping there's an errata soon. I have a punchy-kicky melee guy in my game. :)

This may make a good question for the podcast.

I contend that the force pike is functionally a bludgeoning weapon, or at least a striking weapon, as opposed to a cutting weapon like a vibrosword. It is certainly a vibro-weapon, I would not disagree about that. There are vibromaces and vibrohammers, after all. The pike appears to be intended to be swung, striking the target with the business end. It's also described as a staff topped with a power-tip (rather than a blade or spearhead); the gaffi stick is also described as a staff, and I don't think anyone would disagree that it is primarily a bludgeoning weapon.

I can't say for sure whether a bludgeoning weapon with a vibro-head would benefit from a 'weighted head', but it would certainly generate more force on impact if the head was heavier. In our campaign, I'm using the force pike as a stand-in for a (modified) Gand shockprod staff, and I got the OK from our GM for the weighted head mod.

The gaffi stick can be treated as a bladed/cutting weapon--the description says it has blades that can be used to cut and stab. It should be fine for the serrated edge upgrade.

Personally, I support allowing the force pike to take a serrated edge. It has a vibro tip, and some models of force pike have a spear head. A pike is a bladed weapon, as is a spear--it can be used to slice, cut, and pierce with the head.

While I can see a desperate character trying to whack an enemy with a force pike, I'll have to respectfully disagree with the classification of the force pike as a bludgeoning weapon. When you look at the thing, it is long and skinny with a pointed tip, much more akin to a spear than to a hammer, maul or other traditional bludgeoning weapon.

Yes, the answer on Weighted Head taking up two hard points and weapons in the current rules only having one, is that this is for future compatibility. So expect bludgeoning weapons with two or more hard points to show up in future games or supplements.

Maybe I'm missing something, but can't someone with two levels of "Tinkering" add a weighted head to a truncheon or brass knuckles?

Edit: Never mind. Reread "Tinkerer." Higher ranks give you more items to modify--not more hard points to add as I initially thought.
