I didn't think it would happen very often, but when I was running the Beginner Box for a couple of friends today, Despair and Triumph came up together. Twice. Man, that requires some creative narration. I'm curious what others have come up with.
So the first time, Pash and Oskara were under fire from stormtoopers in the streets of Mos Shuuta on Tatooine. The troopers ended up failing the roll (just barely), but with a Triumph and a Despair. I decided that one of the buildings was pretty tall, rickety, and under repairs. The stormtroopers blew away the scaffolding, and caused much of the building to collapse, covering the area with a cloud of rubble and dust. For the rest of the battle, all actions in that area would suffer two setback dice. That's both good and bad for all sides, so it seems to work.
The second time, they were about to board the ship they were trying to steal, when the Trandoshan slaver who owned it stepped out. The scoundrel held up a part, saying, "We're here to fix your hyperdrive!" Time for that deceit roll. Destiny spent on both sides, and the same thing happens, only this time with a success. So the Trandoshan is convinced, and I suppose really likes the characters. He leads them in, they get to work, then realize the ship is taking off. "Hey, we're gonna take her out for a spin, cool with you guys? I got a few more things to do."
So my lessons learned: Destiny Points will not insure success, but they make things get interesting fast.
The Despair/Triumph combo stand a good chance of making your story ridiculous. But it's pretty fun.
What have you guys done with such combos?
