New Elevation terrain question

By Mighty_Septopus, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello all,

I was reading the rules for the new elevation terrain and was wondering how it affects weapons that have reach. If your attacking an adjacent character with a reach weapon you do not add the additional black defense die. But can you attack a character on a different elevation from a space away with a reach weapon without penalty? Or will the defending character now get the bonus black defense die? Thanks for any help!

As written, a melee attack with Reach is exempt from the normal melee penalty. Period.

So no, the additional black die is not added, regardless of which side of the elevation line the "in between space" falls on.

While on the subject, does elevation block hero special abilities? i.e. can a thief search a token over an elevation line, as long as it's within three spaces? Or for that matter, can you search over elevation at all?

since line of sight isn't broken I would say greedy works, though it doesn't feel like it should.

No, it doesn't block abilities. The rules for elevation specifically say that spaces on either side of the line are still adjacent, even though you can't move across it. Therefore the mechanics for "counting spaces" will work across the line, no problem.

Thanks guys! That's how I understood it, and I let it pass in my game. I just like to come here and look into things we're unsure of after the fact :)
