Edge of the Empire - Appendix N

By Ebon Meerkat, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The game designer of a classic RPG included in its end material a list of recommended reading for potential referees. That list became, and remains, a favorite feature of that game.

I think it would be interesting to assemble something similar here. Not a comprehensive list of all Star Wars IP, but a representative listing for those like myself who have only been exposed to the six feature films and the occasional video game. I would think this representative list would focus only on products that elucidate events, topics and themes addressed in Edge of the Empire; and would also include the best EotE pertinent sourcebooks and adventures from previous incarnations of the Star Wars RPG.

Would anyone care to argue about make some recommendations for such a list? I can collate responses here in this entry.

Trying to let this stay within the concept of the game? That's going to be hard.

Novels:

Comics/graphic novels:

There is a ton of books, but these fit the general theme of the game at least.

Yes, I was trying to keep this within the scope of Edge of the Empire. That does up the number of difficulty dice, I know.

Platt's Starport Guide (WEG)

I am using the novel Scoundrels as the basis of one of my games. Essentially a Star Wars rewrite of Oceans 11 by the Omega of Star Wars authors, Timothy Zahn.

Thanks, jegergryte, I.J. and bsmith23. This is coming along very well, I think.

As for other rpg supplement, why no one has mentioned Scum and Villainy from Saga Edition I don't know, because its a very good fit, it also includes a Shadowport and more stuff well worth looking at.

Also: Galaxy Guide 10: Bounty Hunters is nice, GG11: Criminal Organizations, GG9: Fragments from the Rim, and GG8: Scouts - all these would supply you with lots of fun, all from WEG.

I also think that the Dark Times series and/or Rebellion series from Dark Horse could fit, even if they're not strictly set a few months after the destruction of the first death star and one of them do focus on the rebel ;)

I just bought the Millenium Falcon Owner's Workshop (or something like that). It has the deck plans for the YT-1300 (the f, p, and fp along with the MF itself) and details on numerous other YT ships. Nice resource for a group starting with a YT-1300.

Okay, that's two votes for Dark Times. However, based on the product description, it doesn't feel like a good fit for what I was hoping this list would be. If it almost fits, or kinda fits, it should go on a more comprehensive list. Right now, I'm looking for stuff that is solidly EotE wheelhouse.

Having said that, I have not read it, and will have to defer to those of you that have. Would it be a better fit for a similar list for one of the upcoming games? Or does it need to be on this one?

Jegergryte and HappyDaze, thanks!

Sons of Anarchy

Dukes of Hazzard

Heat

Kane and Lynch: Dead Men and K&L: Dog Days

A couple of seasons ago on Face Off on SyFy the first challenge was to make characters that would be at home in the cantina, each with a short background. Their d20 stats are over on the d20Radio forums. I plan on converting the when I get a chance.

Wretched Hives of Scum and Villainy (WEG) is a great book. Rather than adventures it comes packed with several unique Cantinas, Casinos, and various other seedy places of the galaxy and even comes with some good guidelines for building out your own "Wretched Hives of Scum and Villainy".

Added, strongarm85. Thanks!

Haven't seen these listed yet, but here are two recommendations that are among the first SW novels published:

The first is the classic Han Solo trilogy by Brian Daley (introduces the Corporate Sector and Star's End; both mentioned in the EOTE core book): http://amzn.to/15fxcnS

The second is the Lando Calrissian trilogy by L. Neil Smith: http://amzn.to/13Bznqn

Both series follow the lead characters in various shenanigans and both fit the EotE setting really well, I think. Worth checking out, in paperback or ebook.

Added. Thanks, Ineti!

And it looks like WEG did a Corporate Sector supplement. Should that be added, too?

Absolutely. It's a good supplement and really ties in nicely to the Daley books.

And even though it's a black comedy, there are elements of the cable series BREAKING BAD that might fit really nicely into an EOTE campaign. The main character as a PC who heads down a very dark path makes for an interesting character development track, and there are plenty of things that happen in the various episodes that would fit with some tweaks into a gritty EOTE setting. There are a few characters in the show that would make really good nemeses.

WEG Star Wars Instant Adventures is a nice book, used several of it's adventures a few years ago for a Savage Worlds Star Wars campaign

Heavy Lifting and Family Problems would be very EoE suitable.

There's also WEG's No Disintegrations for PCs to do some bounty hunting adventures.

Thanks, DoctorWhat and HIshgraphics!

There is also the Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin which has a huge emphasis on the Hutts, Nar Shaddaa, and the "fringe" element that would later form the Rebel Alliance. Definitely worth a read.

For non-Star Wars media that has an appropriate Edge of the Empire feel, the anime series Black Lagoon would be well worth a look. It's in a modern setting based around a group of pirates/mercenaries operating a military speedboat in the South Pacific, working out of a fictional port in Thailand called Roanapur.

Despite the real world setting, I don't think there's a single plot or character from that show that couldn't be ported directly into an Edge of the Empire game by changing the bullets for blasters and the boats for starships.

Added, and added. Thanks, guys!
