Brand new group starting to play AGoT LCG. Questions.

By DarkFather, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi all;

We have a small group of AGoT LCG players forming in our local area, and I just wanted to ask a few (probably really obvious) questions. (Oh, and hope to have them answered. LOL)....

1) Are 'Keywords' also abilities (eg: Renown, Stealth, Deadly, etc), or are they traits , or something else altogether?

2) (Will be answered with #1's answer above, but...) If Renown, Stealth, etc are infact abilities, do they also 'trigger'? (Example: Is attacking the 'trigger' for the Stealth or Deadly ability to be used? Is winning a challenge the 'trigger' for renown? Etc.)

3) If a characters 'text box' is 'blanked'... does that include the 'Keywords'? (Most state that they blank the text box or area, except traits ).

I'm bound to remember other silly questions, but right now they have escaped me. I'm currently printing out the 29 pages of the FAQ. So I have a lot of reading ahead of me.

Be gentle, please. We're all new players in my area.

Cheers

We don't bite! Don't hesitate to ask your questions - the game's timing and rule intricacies can be quite intimidating, and people on this forum will be more than happy to help.

1) Keywords are simply "keywords". They are not "character abilities" (See FAQ 3.7), nor are they "Traits". The game's keywords are listed on pages 20 and 21 of the core rulebook (plus Joust and Melee, added later)

2) For most purposes, the word "trigger" specifically refers to activating bolded text (always optional). In some cases the word trigger is referred to as the initiation point for a passive, but that's mostly just poor templating. Regardless, even where keywords act similarly to passives (eg Renown, but not Ambush), they are not "triggered" for the purposes of any effects which interact with triggered effects and, like passives, they also aren't optional; vigilant always happens (although you may choose to stand 0 characters upon winning), renown always happens, etc.

3) Yes - keywords are a part of a character's text box. There are a couple entries in the FAQ that help you clarify what counts as part of a text box, and what doesn't - just look up the word "text box"

Hi;

Thank you for those clarifications. A sticking point for a few of us were particular characters who ignore opposing character abilities. So we were under the impression that those characters (that ignore) couldn't be effected by Deadly, Stealth, etc al. But from what you say, they can be. Cool. Thank you.

Yup - that's right!

Yet another question.

Trait: Kingdom.... Our group are taking it that these cards (from the Greyjoy expansion) are 'land'. Correct?

Cheers.

I think at the moment all Kingdoms are indeed locations but i dont know what relevance this would have. What are you tryig to do/ query ?

Just trying to work out where in the playing field to place them, and if they are affected like other land/location cards by discarding/taking control of abilities.

You can recognize location cards by the mountain background behind their titles.

That's what I thought too. But the Kingdom cards do not have the mountain background and in the pamphlet that comes in the greyjoy expansion, a Kingdom card can be plainly seen located where land/location cards are placed. This has been the source of our groups confusion (over this particular quandary).

What specific card are you referring to ? All locations have the same mountain background as mentioned and therefore i am confused. If you give us the name of the card then we can reference it and see what is causing the confusion.

Thanks

I apologize. The card(s) I'm referring to are Kingdom of Shadows and Bay of Ice. Both from the Kings of the Sea expansion.

Both of these are 100% locations but they are slightly different in look , i believe this is because they are cards that can go in all houses and as such the design is that the crests go vertically down the right side. There are a dozen or so cards where this happens

FYI : You will find is useful if you also use www.cardgamedb.com in conjunction with this site. In particulare you can do card searches which tells you all about the card. Very useful tool

A clarification should be made here, it isn't a "mountain" background, but a "parchment" background. The Kingdom locations are all images of maps, so just imagine that the parchment background that would normally be confined to the strip behind the title extends across the whole card.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
