Explorer-Fringer talent tree questions

By PaladinSB, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

First post - new to the game. I didn't play the beta, so I'm just figuring things out reading through the core rulebook. I'm trying to make my first character, but I've already hit two things I don't understand in the Fringer talent tree:

1) Why is Street Smarts - 5 points in the first row twice? Should there be a fourth, different talent there instead of one of them?

2) The rulebook on p.93 states that you can only choose talents connected to ones you already have by lines. The column starting with "Galaxy Mapper" has nothing connected after the 15 point level - does that mean that if you start with "Galaxy Mapper", you can't get any talents beyond the 15 point ones?

Thanks for the help!

The talents below are connected over to the third column. Think dimensionally on a cramped paper. Those other talents should form a fifth sixth seventh etc row, but there's not that much space so it wraps around.

And lots of trees start with the same talents, it's so that you can stack real quick and be different from other characters quickly. Also probably because they didn't want too much variety so the trees don't have 20 unique talents, and they had to decide where to slot everything, and the beefy powers just had to be put later, leaving an earlier spot open for the repeat.

1) Nope, its there twice because its benefit is per rank. So if you've taken it twice, you get twice the benefit.

2) To get to the 4th row below Galaxy Mapper, you need to come at it from the right side. The route from Galaxy Mapper does indeed dead end, but you can always take 1st row Talents.

I think I see what you're saying... there's nothing for 20 or 25 points beyond, Master Starhopper and Defensive Driving. If I want the 20 and 25 point talents, I'm going to have to take Street Smarts or Rapid Recovery at some point to start down another column? That makes sense, I guess.

Yes. You are not limited to only one column of talents. Take two or three on the top tier and then work your way down via the paths shown.

Don't think in columns. Think of them as streets on a map to take you the route you want to go. You can take one first-row talent and get all the rest through pathways and backtracking.
