Alternate "Systems"

By ejacobs, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello!

Now that the Core Rulebook is out, has anyone started work on any non-SW game systems/universes/galaxies using the EotE rules? The narrative dice system seems like the way to go to really bring a lot of other systems to life around the table.

HALO

Aliens/Predator

WH40K

Judge Dredd/2000AD

These are just a few examples.

Just creating some of the creatures for a few of these can introduce some great "alternative universe" threats for players of Star Wars Edge.

Good gaming!

I think once people know the system better you will see more of this.

I actually think the system would be great for something like Last Airbender/Legend of Korra, but that would be using basically only the narrative dice and talent tree system, obviously.

But I think the advantage/threat system would work really well to narrate the back and forth of a martial arts fight, with each roll representing a bunch of attacks/counter attacks/blocks.

Planning an Escape From New York riff set on a prison called "Detroit." It's a bit more Sci-Fi version, but the concept will be the same. Hired Gun touches down in "Detroit." A prison colony built on the moon. He will be given the identity of some potential allies (other players, maybe a GMPC potential betrayer.) His job will be to take out a target, and recover some McGuffin, and Escape from Detroit.

Warhammer 40K already has its own system and is published by FFG, but it seems to be a percentile system. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay on the other hand uses the dice pools familiar to EotE.

I suspect it won't be that hard to effectively convert the system to alternate settings...

Originally I thought about Traveller...but then I thought better of it. It seems to me that this game system has a definite PULP feel....with wide swings in fortunes. And while some settings could benefit from this, other would be ruined by it as it would change to feel entirely.

Firefly is probably the simplest conversion. Remove lightsabers, the Force, and non-human species. Re-flavor blasters as lasers, and make them much more expensive and much rarer. Done!

I'm currently a player in a medieval campaign using Basic Role Playing (the root of Call of Cthulu and RuneQuest). I showed the GM for that campaign the EotE system and all the narrative possibilities. We're pretty "old school antagonistic" in our play...we grew up with the original D&D... but after he grasped the concepts his jaw drops and the first thing out of his mouth was "can we adapt this for our medieval game?!"

I prefer this to WFR3...too convoluted and too much paraphernalia plus--and this is somewhat trivial, but still--we both hate the Warhammer art and aesthetic. We'd have to replace the techie and knowledge skills, invent talent trees, and somehow graft a magic system onto it. I'm not sure it's worth the effort, but it sure would be an improvement.

Revamp Force Exile into Psychic Runaway and basically just give them access to the Sense tree.

So I've been lurking the forums for a while and meaning to make an account but this totally made me have to respond.

THIS.

I definitely think the narrative dice would lend itself well to this.

I keep hearing that the game can support Firefly style play and all I can think is that means it could be great for Futurama too!

Yeah the narrative dice would lend it self to a comedy/cartoon universe very well I feel, Futurama, Toon, or what I was thinking, Discworld. Likewise anything with a pulpy feel, Indiana Jones to John Carter and Conan, I've also considered a Judge Dredd game, but for now I'm having too much fun in the Star Wars universe!

I know there are people going for a Mass Effect hack, Elder Scrolls too, over on the d20 radio forum. So I know some people have adapted it to fantasy settings and play-tested it.

Yep, I'm thinking of using it for Firefly, depending on how the new Firefly RPG looks.

I was really looking at Firefly, Dredd, and HALO as being those that could easily be ported over into this system without too much difficulty. Firefly for long term, and the others for more short campaigns or such.

Of course, my book just arrived and I'm really excited to be diving back in time to that distant galaxy!

I am thinking if I do hack this game I will hack it for my sci-fi/western alternate-history world I have been brainstorming off and on again for a while now.

I briefly created some Mass Effect Races in the Beta Forums.

I am currently working on a very simplified conversion for old west called "Edge of the Union".
