Updating conditions?

By jim_t_ca, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I was just wondering if there are plans to "officially" update some monsters and conditions. There are several examples of older monsters who should cause some of the newer conditions. i.e. Burning, anything with fire breath, the Air elementals fire attack, the Lava Beetle's blast attack. Even entering Lava should cause Burning. I'm sure there are other conditions that could be applied to other monsters as well but these are just the most obvious.

Burning was incorporated in Layer of the Wyrm. The conversion kit covered much of those others where it took older monsters and moved them to be used for D2.

As for Lava, it does one damage if you move through it. If you end your turn on it you die. ^.^

I think he understands what actually happens, but if FFG will ever improve upon it by incorporating Burning into other compatible places, i.e. entering lava should cause Burning, etc.

ah, I see. I missed that, sorry. That would be nice. It would really encourage us OL to force a hero into spaces like that, yes.

Interesting suggestion, but difficult to apply, if we want the rules corpus' integrity to be preserved.

However, such adaptations can be made in encounters special rules.

For Lava, however, even if the burning condition is thematically interesting, the present effects are more deadly than burning condition, so from a "design for effect" point of view, burning would not really add something to the penalties of lava.

I sincerely doubt FFG will ever officially "go back" and add Burning to older effects, as the OP suggests. The reason being is because if they did that, then players would NEED to have the Lair of the Wyrm expansion in order to play Descent 2E core + Conversion Kit. That would seriously screw over anyone who doesn't own LoW.

It may be true that most of the fans in these forums buy everything right away and cherish it (I know I try my best to do so), but that doesn't mean that everyone does. FFG loves to bombard us with new expansion material, but they're always careful to design it in such a way that it isn't strictly necessary in order to continue playing.

Exactly my thinking, Steve-O, though I didn't actually get around to expressing it, only clarifying OP's point. While definitely interesting, it necessitates Lair of the Wyrm, which not every player will have, and also editing everything in the base game and Conversion Kit, something I wouldn't imagine them doing.

It's definitely something worth trying at home and house-ruling, though. Not official, but definitely a neat idea!
