Researcher Talent Question (Colonist:Scholar)

By Whitefro, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So it removes a setback per rank on all knowledge checks, and it also reduces the time to research by 50%.

Is there a specific rules entry about researching? Is it just a open for interpretation bonus to this talent that allows the players to research or are there specific things that we can research? Appreciate thoughts and opinions.

Also do we have sub forums for stuff like this yet or is it all still just under eote for now?

I think research is intended to apply to any situation in which you are gathering information outside of a conversation with a person. This could mean examining a datacron or datapad, examining ancient markings in a tomb, examining holovids (instructional, historical or what have you), or even I suppose observing people or droids interact--you might be studying the behavior of guards at a palace your group is casing to rob, or studying the behavioral patterns of a Krayt dragon so you're better prepared before entering it's lair (this would probably be a Xenology check). These observations might provide your group with boost dice on their own attempts in the mission.

The time it takes to research something, in my view, is especially of the essence when time itself is of the essence. Perhaps you need to study that rare galactic map in the cave before the whole mountain comes sliding down on top of you--in game terms this might happen in four turns, but your talent can make sure you can get the job done in just two.

That's my thoughts on the matter anyway.

That's the sort of thing I was thinking it meant, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something specific that I missed. Thanks for the quick reply

Yeah, there's no hard and fast rule for how long it takes to do actual research, so you didn't miss anything there. It's just handy if the GM figures "Well, it'll take you a couple hours to dig through all those records," enabling the PC to respond "Well, since I have Researcher, I'm good enough at sifting through those sorts of things that it'll only take me an hour or so."

Galaxy Mapper has a similar time discount, but no hard rules on how long an Astrogation check should take.

Also, no real sub-forums yet, other than the old Beta sub-forums.
