Thoughts on Movement and Range Bands

By azato, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am thinking about range bands and perhaps combining the abstract with a bit more tactical feel.

1. Place maps on a grid where each square/hex= 10 meters
2. Anything within the square is Short Range
3. To become engaged spend 1 movement
4. To move one square - spend 1 movement
5. Anything one to two squares away is Medium Range
6. Anything farther than that is Long Range.
7. If you want to take advantage of anything within a square ('hide behind boxes', etc) takes 1 movement.

I think it's a fine House Rule if you do want a more tactical feel.

I don't personally feel it would be necessary to do this under the current system. With maps and tokens I think you can keep track well enough. I even use some maps intended for the old Star Wars tabletop game and just ignore the grid. It's about showing your players about what range their characters are from the enemy and going from there.

But there's nothing wrong with your plan and if you like it better I say, go for it.

This is almost exactly what I have been doing, except I use zone which can be any shape and not just squares. Also, 3 or 4 zones is long range and 5 or 6 zones is extreme range.

By the way, your text color is hard to read with the background.

Ugh, dark gray text on light gray background. I had to highlight it to read without squinting. Just keep the text white, man!

Heh, i had that same reaction, Tilt. I thought it was a blank post at first.

Not sure why it was gray...thought maybe it was just me with starting a new thread. Corrected.

My original thought was using zones a la Diaspora/Fate and likely would use something similar but using a general 10 meter clear terrain guide-line. Thus you could contour appropriately and adjust the size as needed.

you should move more than one square per maneuver. AGI square per maneuver ?

For the text things. I think someone else said on a different thread that it may be browser compatibility issues. Make sure your browser is up-to-date.

Our group uses the chit system originally presented in WFRP 3E. I'll draw the "encounter on a whiteboard, then place the participants, but effectively every creature has its own range bands to every other creature. We indicate this by using 1 close, 2 short, 3 medium, 4 long, 5 extreme. If there is a specific "group" of individuals (like my axe wielding barbarian and her toys) I'll denote the groups relative position as well.

it can ge a little cumbersome, but your squares ides could work in a similar fashion. it depends on how specific you want the environment to be. i know there are some tile sets that WotC may still produce that are geared towards Star Wars.
