Custom Avatar

By Darkspell, in Descent Home Brews

Holy Cow!!! I just noticed this thread for the first time and I am blown away by all the work you have put into these avatars. Very Nicely done. I'm gearing up to run another RTL campaign this summer and think I might have to try out one of these to see how it works.

Thanks!

Judd

Thanks Judd,

If you let me know which Avatar you are considering, I'll make an effort to finalize it. I've been pretty busy so I haven't' had a lot of time to get back to these designs.

I'll be able to translate final versions in french if you want. Tell me if you're interested with that.

There are some awesome concepts in here, with minor tweaking needed.

The most standout change that seems to must be made (as someone pointed out) is with the Vampire Lord: Fly + Shadowcloak is a big no-no. When soaring outdoors they would be near unstoppable.

Good point Dashakan. The best fix I have for that is to add the comment that they gain Fly and Shadowcloak, but not Soar. Good catch.

great work

well done and i can't wait to see the finished cards and avatars and use them

It has been awhile, but I'm back. Promise or threat I have started work on the Avatar's Keeps. The first one is the treacherous Kobold King (his Avatar card, Lietenant and Upgrades are on page 2 of this post). I am planning on playtesting it a bit, but I would like to hear some feedback as I work on it. Here is the first draft:

I'm considering buying Descent, and am a big fan of homebrew content. Is there a program that you guys are using for your homebrew content (such as Strange Eons for Arkham Horror), or are you using photoshop or an image editing application?

Thanks for your help!

While this might already have been answered...

What do you have as costs on "Dark Healing" and "Infernal Blessings"?

Sorry, been in a bit of chaos around here. I just moved so I'll have to dig my design work out of boxes to answer your questions. Infernal Charm was a 20, I remember that as I didn't want that kind of power to be available to purchase off the start. The Dark Healing was 5 if I remember correctly as it replaces the Dark Priests standard attack. Thanks for the interest Kard, please let me know if someone is trying one of the Avatars out and I can focus on finalizing keeps etc. Thanks to the new tileset program I should now be able to reduce the design work by a significant amount, woot! Playtesting is my biggest challenge so if anyone wants to volunteer, I'll happily accept vict...I mean applications.

I've been running the Vampire Lord in my group and it is working well, still early in the campaign and the devilish heroes are focusing all efforts on preventing me from razing a city as I am also using ascension. Failed three times to roll a surge to get the first city and the heroes were able to chase my Lieutenant off. Unfortunately even game time is on hold until I get the house back in order.

In response to Admiral142, I use word, excel, photoshop, the Descent editor by Mike Z and now the tileset program posted by Avianfoo.

Nice Work Keep up the great work looking forward to the other Keeps

Thanks for the work

Question about the Wildhunt.

Were he to die in an encounter, would that be a wrap on the campaign as a loss for the overlord/win for the heroes? I can see that circumstance being heavily balancing against the strength of his constant presence that people are concerned about. Making it somewhat of a risk for the OL player to throw him around lightly and without consideration. (This thematically makes the most sense, since regeneration/resurrection aren't apparent in his skill set)

Also, as a "lieutenant" does he receive the benefits of his Avatar cards, or are they reserved for the final battle alone? (Apologies if this has already been asked)

I'm glad to see some interest in the Avatars, are you running the Wildhunt in a campaign?

As for your questions, The Hunter should be treated like any other Lieutenant other then he isn't placed on the map and may enter any encounter based on the die roll. If he is defeated the Avatar is not defeated, instead he is weakened as in he can no longer leave his Keep to harass the heroes. In game terms the Lieutenant card is removed from play like any other Lieutenant until the final battle where it will be used again for the Avatar's stats.

The Avatar cards will only come into play during the final battle.

I would love to hear about any campaigns in which any of the custom Avatars have been used and how they worked.

Darkspell, would you have any problems with compiling maybe all your genious work into one printable sheet pdf? that would be ******* great and awesome. Keep up your good work!

couold we maybe get a blank template of the cards you work on?

Hi Hoduken,

I'm afraid I don't have a template, I modify scanned images of the Avatars using Photoshop.

Hi OL God :) ,

what is the update for your creation ? did you finalize it ?

Is it somewhere on the web ? :)

Thanks for your work and your ingenious idea :) .

Best regards from Evil Belgium

Any update :) :), i may restart a campain after a nice Heros crush with the spider queen (175 CP vs 50 CP), and i would like try your new Avatar :) :)

I am back, having survived the chaos of the new year. I've been mainly working on RTL2.0 and not so much on the Avatars. If there is a specific Avatar you are interested in let me know and I can gather it together and send it to you. Once again sorry for not responding sooner.

I am of the opinion that the Avatar's final battle should be treated as a Lietenant encounter with no standard reinforcement. You have some good points on the Witch Elves Shadowcloak, I guess we'll have to see which way would work better with a test. Any thought on the Dark Bishop, I like the way he worked out but I expect heroes will hate him. I also have one more Avatar for your review:

his Lieutenant:

and his Avatar Upgrades:

You do understand that fly and shadowcloack in an encounter effectively make the creature immortal and impossible to affect with anything? Since as long as it is soaring you can never be adjacent to it. Game breaking effect anyone?

Also here is a custom AVATAR made by me some time ago after i tried to rip off the Count from SOB since we don't play SOB or either own it.

Also i don't know if you changed the stuff you had or not but having the most powerful power card in game (Concealing Shadows) as a reinforcement should really unbalance the game. That is ofcourse if your OL isn't bad and your players are really good that is so i guess it depends on your group.

Well i am definetely stealing your Kobold King as i always wanted to make Kobolds usefull (not to mention the whole humanoids as they are the weakest ever type). I don't know if you have playtested him but spawing and activating on the players turn can really break games since you will able to kill on their turn without them being able to do anything about it and it will only complicate things more as you really can't cover spawn as you move square by square. I will just use the spawn ability without the activation bit. Now flying kobolds as someone said i am guessing it has very limited uses, i am guessing the idea came from the Lieutenant that you made. But inside the dungeons you won't have razorwings and kobolds at the same time and even if you have since the kobolds with their upgrade have 5 speed i don't think they will need the transport. But anyway it is a great idea and will probably use it just to playtest it.

Very good work mate. Hope you are having fun in your campaigns.

Zeb's ability is the best idea i have ever heard. I was even thinking if that could be introduced as a home rule so that all LT's have this ability since it isn't game breaking or anything and gives chance for the OL to recover from dead LT's.

Amazing and originals ideas there as i read them through. Love the Hunt stuff. Will certainly use them to make new avatars for my game to go along with the new heroes. This is my take of you hunt avatar since i tweaked some stuff i didn't like or thought was breaking the game. But it is still 90% of your work. Great stuff and work there mate.
