Attacking From Stealth

By Lambalazar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

First, 'sup, all. Name's Lambalazar.

Back in the Saga Edition days, there were set rules for sniping; as in attacking while sneaking or from a hidden position and using a move action with a -10 penalty to remain stealthed. As far as I can tell, this is not covered in EotE. I've read through the book a couple of times and didn't see anything.

If I missed it, please let me know. Wouldn't be the first time. Otherwise, what do you all think would be a comparable mechanic in the new system? A couple of setback dice on the stealth check? Upgrading the dice?

No specific rules. For me, someone sniping, if undiscovered, would gain what amounts as a free attack and the benefits of the Aim maneuver (1 or 2 boost dice) depending how long they set up. Whether they stay hidden after the attack depends on a Stealth check with some setback dice (2 or more depending on situation) added for having shot. I try to keep it simple.

Agreed.

Now, I'm still getting used to the system. I run an Infiltrator. How would that turn break down? I either walk into the shadows (or whatever) and make the stealth check as part of that. Maybe spend the two strain to aim. Would the stealth check be a reaction after the attack? That'd mean I'd be making two stealth checks in that turn. Should that second one cost a maneuver of it's own? Trying to figure out a good balance. Don't want it to be too overpowered.

Trying to use stealth during combat would be a Using a Skill action. When I was refering to a free attack for a sniper, I meant that he would get a free attack before intitiative. Once combat starts he takes his turn along with everyone else. If you are trying to get a sneak attack in combat, you could perform a Stealth action one round to hide then spring from hidden the next, giving boost dice much like the Aim maneuver. i would not allow a free attack once in combat as you would have to pay normally for your attack.

I wasn't going for a free attack. Getting the feeling I don't understand the new system as well as I thought I did. Haha.

Yeah, see what you mean now. Stuck in d20 stuff a little bit. It's way harder than it was in Saga to sneak around during a fight. I had a guy that was pretty much invisible in every circumstance because of how high his stealth was and the way the rules are worded. Sneaking was just part of moving.

Looks like if I want to do the same thing in EotE, I'd only be able to attack every other turn. Hm. I'd still have a great set-up for a surprise attack starting combat, but that's only the first attack. I guess, logically, to stay hidden I'd have to move positions between attacks to be doing all this, anyway.

Sometimes, I miss the exploits in Saga. Even when they didn't make sense. Haha.

You can still sneak around with stealthy maneuvers in combat...although it might make more sense to make it an Action since you are going slower as you sneak. And when you pounce, you would still get bonus dice. It would just have to make sense to the GM and party about how you did it. Going from cover to cover would make sense. Being nigh invisible without a stealth suit, makes less sense.

Blame it on my Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory days. All you needed was darkness and/or skill, and no one could tell where you were. Even if you shot, all they would know is someone's dead, not necessarily where it came from, making it harder for them to shoot back or locate you. That's kinda the basis for my Stealth logic.

Ah...I think an exclamation point just popped up over my head. :D

Metal Gear references also appreciated. +1 kudos to you.

Get yourself a stealth field generator and go all predator on everyone. Till it craps out on you.

"You're looking for Predator, aren't you."

"......yes."

"He's invisible."

"He has a tell-tale shimmer!"

I love Archer.
