Wookiee questions

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

1) When were the Wookiees enslaved by the Empire? Was it just the ones on Kashyyyk or all of them?

2) How rare are Wookies intended to be in the EotE setting?

3) How strong is the hatred between Wookiees and Trandoshans? Is it reasonable to have both in the same group?

4) Are all Wookiees essentially nudists (aside from assorted belts, bandoleers, shoulder pads, and/or man-purses)? Would a Wookiee in heavy clothing be unusual?

Edited by HappyDaze

I think I heard that Fox wanted Lucas to put pants on Chewie while filming Star Wars.

1) When were the Wookiees enslaved by the Empire? Was it just the ones on Kashyyyk or all of them?

Very shortly after Palpatine became Emperor. The Wookiees tried (unsuccessfully) to protect several refugee Jedi, and Vader and the Emperor took this as an excuse to enslave them.

1. 19 BBY.

All of Kashyyyk was enslaved. Any Wookiees not on Kashyyyk at the time were attempted to be hunted down.

2. I would say they would not be so rare on the rim, but more so toward the core worlds.

3. The Trandoshans were the ones that suggested to the Empire that Wookiees should be enslaved. Trandoshans suggested this so the Empire could exploit the powerful Wookiees for slave labor. Transdoshans also assisted in rounding up escaped and stray Wookies for the Empire. Having a Wookiee and a Transdoshan working together would be unusual, but VERY interesting...

4. Yes, Wookies are pretty much nudists (LOL). It is due to religious beliefs that Wookiees hold. So you would not see a Wookiee in heavy clothes.

Hope that answers your questions! :)

Whatever happened to Wookiee claws? They use them for climbing and also in combat if they go "madclaw" and become dishonored. Did claws get added to the Core book stats for Wooks?

They didn't, no. Which I'm okay with, since while the claws are technically there, they aren't really a feasible 'option' for most player character Wookiees.

If you ever needed the claws, copy the Trandoshan entry and then say farewell to the character who's now become an NPC? o.O

I looked but couldn't find a source on Wookiees not wearing clothes for religious reasons. Can you point me to it? I had an idea for a Wookiee wearing a kilt-like outfit floting around my head.

Also, is it possible for a PC Wookiee to use his claws in battle? I know it would make him a social pariah (and leads to exile), bit is should be possible, right? Perhaps taking Strain for doing so might be an option?

While you wouldn't see a Wookiee in heavy clothes, a player should still be able to purchase that item for their character and wear it.

The rules say that Droids can buy pistols and simply say that they are built into their arms, or armor and say it is Droid Plating. As such I don't see why a Wookiee can't use heavy clothes and call it a Heavy Sash or Heavy Belt or something. This prevents Wookiees from being disadvantaged as compared to other armor wearing species.

Look under the Wookieepedia heading of "Clothing" it states:

"The Wookiees from Kashyyyk , who were known for their thick uniform coat of water-shedding hair, [6] only wore clothes on special occasions, including the Life Day celebration, which required the use of a ritual red robe . [7] "

It is also in one of the expanded universe books, which I cannot remember for the life of me right now. Sorry.

SWG Wiki alludes to also this by stating Wookiees belief system rejects materialism.

Of course, some are going to be hard line nudists (like Chewie), but I'm not going to accept that as the norm.

Of course. Why would you? By definition player characters are abnormal and anomolous compared to the rest of their races. So if they want to wear heavy clothes, armor, or whatever there is no reason they can't. There is also no reason you can not describe what they are wearing in some other fashion too. Heavy clothes could be a thick leather tabard or something similar. Something that would be more inkeeping with a wookie dress code.

It should be easy enough to explain that a Wookiee raised off of Kashyyyk and immersed in the ways of others learned to cover themselves like their neighbors do. A tribesmen from the Amazon is going to put on a bit of cloth when he comes to Seattle to work for Amazon, and I choose to see it the same here. Of course, some are going to be hard line nudists (like Chewie), but I'm not going to accept that as the norm.

To each their own...

It comes down to it is your universe to make, so do whatever you want to there. :)

As for the claws thing, I'd have to say that for EotE, Snoova is as appropriate of an example of a Wookiee PC as Chewbacca.

Actually, this perhaps shows an opportunity. Racial specs. Specializations aimed at specific races. So you could have a wookie racial spec that allows you to focus on creating a wookie that better uses his claws, or maybe is just a better melee combatant. Could be something to look into if enough call for it. They could exemplar of races.

But the tribesman is more likely to need the clothes in the colder environment than a wookie simply because he's not used to the temperature swings that the more temperate parts of the planet go through and lacks the natural covering of something like a wookie.

About Wookiees not specifically having claws, how about this notion?

Part of their free rank in Brawl reflects that they do have these claws, and that while not used in combat due to honor system that's been drilled into the heads of Wookiees since they were cubs, a particularly nasty Critical Injury result from a Brawl attack could be the Wookiee saying "screw this!" and literally tearing into that opponent, especially if it's a minion.

Far easier to just give them claws (like the Trandoshan) and let the Wookiee's player decide to use them or not.

Donovan's idea none the less works fine so long as it is the player who decides to use the critical attack in this way, and not the GM.

Precisely. it's the player's choice. Also, the player could just choose to describe a high damage roll as being an instance of breaking out the claws. Further, just because a madclaw is using their claws, that doesn't always mean it's going to be a nasty attack that rips someone's throat out.

Again, to stress the point, Wookiee society puts a very heavy stigma against using one's claws in combat. I actually like that FFG didn't include claws as an automatic thing for Wookiees in this RPG, either as a bonus to Athletics when climbing or as claws that a right-minded Wookiee would never use in the first place.

If it ultimately comes down to it, have the player spend a Destiny Point to gain claws similar to the Trandoshans' for that one attack. Seeing as how Wookiees already have a high Brawn and get a bonus to damage when wounded, I think a Destiny Point is a fair trade for a potentially devastating attack.

The claws are about as effective as a combat knife. Not too unbalanced to give it to them, especially considering the social baggage that comes with using them.

It would be interesting to add in some extra obligation if a player chooses to use his claws, something the PC the has to try to live with.
