Wookiee questions

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Nope. I actually have found that my players all think the Wookiee species build in Edge is somewhat lacking.

Regardless of where the claws were first mentioned, they are called out in the Edge of the Empire core rulebook's Wookiee entry as being used for climbing. Now that a rule for a similar effect exists on the Kadas'sa'Nikto, I think it should be extended to the Wookiees too.

:P

Some things are more true than others. The RPG is caught in between what was and what is, trying to cram it all in. As more stuff comes out, the old fades away. If a chimpanzee or other great ape can climb without claws, why can't a wookie?

Not to necro this thread again, but has there been a consensus with regards to the claws? Doing my research, these "claws" date back to every utterance of the RPG but this one. Since I'm planning on doing an adventure module based on kashyyyk, I would like in some part, a finality or at least a compromise that could be shared through all and agreed upon. My take, so far reading this thread is to give boost dice to climb, and to add flavor to critical hits. A "bad claw" perhaps should be take as similar to Kadas'sa'Nikto suggestion. In all instances there should be something bad associated with the use of it, as this seems to be the point of contention, regardless if there is or is not claws. Anyways, a compromise in common should be navigated to so that I can use it.

Their planet is one of giant forests and they (apparently) live up in the trees. So claws would make sense from a species point of view. But I've never seen anything in canon that says they have them. The EotE book says they do though, so I just go with that and I'm fine with it. I think an idea that they'd never, ever, whatever be used in combat is pretty silly though. If you have dangerous claws and you're in a serious fight, I can't imagine them not getting used. What? It's dishonourable? And no wookie has ever set their life ahead of their honour? Dumb idea and apparently there just to stop players claiming a +1 to damage or something.

Huh. Thanks for info, doing some research now on it and I found this tidbit

The concept of madclaws was, indirectly, created by Timothy Zahn , author of the " Thrawn Trilogy ." In his 1991 novel Heir to the Empire , Zahn introduced the protractible claws of the Wookiees in order to make their tree-climbing more realistic. However, he realized that his new addition to canon caused a discrepancy: if the Wookiees had indeed claws, Chewbacca would have used them in the original Star Wars movies. [1] Five years later, Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook resolved the discrepancy, explaining that it was a matter of honor that Wookiees never used their claws in combat, but kept them strictly for climbing. [2]

So, it appears that answers some questions. Ill need to think more deeply on this matter.

Not sure why they would need claws to make their tree climbing more "realistic". Apes and monkies do it all the time. I always pictured something more like that with wookies.

Plus, if you actually get up close and look at chewbacca's hands, he has fingernails.

Wookies naturally grow their own clothes in the form of protective fur. They would have no biological or cultural impetus to develop garments simply to cover themselves. Useful things like bandoleers, tool-belts, or hazmat suits would be a different matter. And, a wookie engineer could reasonably want / need coveralls to keep his fur from getting caught in things, or singed. Also, unless wookies have very tough heels, some sort of soles to protect their feet would make sense.

Plus, if you actually get up close and look at chewbacca's hands, he has fingernails.

And, we get a very good look at his hands while he's planting charges in TFA.

This is again forking decision on which way you want to choose. Legends canon, or new canon? I guess in the new canon, Wookiees won't have claws, becuase we never see them. In revenge of the Sith, the wokiees, who jump on the sides of the droid tanks, just hold tight with their hands and feet.

I think it will be much more likely, that wookiees have prehensile feet, than climbing claws.

Right. Thanks for the frank discussion on this topic, sure changes things here on my end. I think one boost dice for climbing makes perfect sense now. As for "madclaw" or what have you I think that's going to be more of a "going back to a primal state" and using your rage to kill your enemies for fun/profit/darkside, which would be very un-honorific. A wookie who uses that rage to straight up murder people just because ??? profit is going to be labeled and dealt with. Hmm, I am sensing a theme and I could have a part of the adventure deal with this taboo, and the reason why or how it came to exist and the implications of it, and why they label some as "madclaws". Interesting! :) Yes I am using this discussion as a brainstorming mode to help with development for the module.
