How many dice packs?

By papy72, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Is one pack of the special dice enough?

A lot of people are finding that single dice pack comes up short, particularly where Challenge dice are concerned, and for those instances where a character has a Characteristic of 4 or 5 and is rolling nothing but Ability dice.

Honestly, if I didn't already have the Beginner Box, I'd have bought two dice packs to have enough for most instances.

No. At least 2 or 3 sets will be needed. I have 4 and may buy another.

Although, as an alternative option, there is a dice-roller app for the iPhone, Android, and Kindle.

It's $5, but that's a lot cheaper than spending $30+ on dice... provided you have one of those devices.

Granted, $5 is a bit steep for an app, but it's a licensed Star Wars product (that right there jacks up the price), and it's got some fun bells and whistles (such as Star Wars sound effects to replace the default dice rolling sound), as well as being usable for the X-Wing minis game and as a regular dice roller.

I've used it quite a bit, and while it's not the same as rolling physical dice, it's a cost-viable substitute if you've got a device to run the app.

I'd hesitate to say 'needed.'

For the majority of rolls, the dice in a single pack will suffice, especially early on. In the event that you need to roll more dice than you have, just take note of what's been rolled, then roll that type of die again.

i bought the beginners box and that was almost enough dice so I only need one pack. Granted this means everyone sharing but if anyone else wants more then they will need to buy their own. :-) So its a matter of perspective ... this coming form the guy with a Gallon storage container filled with dice I have collected over the years.

Two seems sufficient, especially this early in the game's cycle.

The dice app gives you ample space, allowing up to 20 dice on screen at a time. You can also set it to show results at the botton making it VERY easy to track what the results are and do you canceling of icons.

Then again, you don't GET TO ROLL ACTUAL DICE!!! :o

I have four dice packs. More than enough dice as everyone can grab what they need for rolls. Speeds up the game during combat/action. We are old school, like our physical dice and also prefer to have our own sets....... cause someone else's hands could taint the roll. ;)

I bought 2 additional sets and the beginners box. This covers any real situation. If they introduce new dice types for the following games I may regret it.. but then again.. DICE!

So far I have one set plus the beginners box, which actually turns out to be two full sets. This will handle pretty much any dice pool needed, but not so much if you have players lining up their dice pool ahead of their own turns... So I have the 2, but I also have the iPhone/iPad app as well in case I need to go bigger. The nice thing about the iFashionaccesory app is that it totals thing for you rut away...

I bought 4 + beginners game. That's for 4-5 players and a GM. It's the minimum if you want the game to flow fairly well.

I have this App. It's pretty nice. Also something to note is that it also has built in standard dice (D4-D%). Five bucks isn't that much for a quality App. I use it all the time, even for just general gaming. It's a good deal.

Not that it replaces the real deal of course, but if for any reason you need some kind of a secret roll... it's a great tool especially for DM's.

Stop buying extra dice, everybody! I ordered one set at he same time as the core book and GM's kit. My books have arrived, but Amazon.co.uk has updated me as recently as today saying that my dice are still not available to ship. Leave some dice for the rest of us! :P Fortunately, it's not as if I'm actually going to get to play anytime soon...

Have the beta-sticker dice still (trying to keep them rolling for as long as possible!), beginner's game dice, and bought two packs at my FLGS yesterday (amazon just couldn't deliver it seemed). Should be enough, but I think two packs would suffice, three or four would be ideal for more experienced characters.

Sorry, it must be me, I bought 2 dice packs (one is for one of my player), and I still have the set from the Beginner's box. I'll give it to you, if you can come over pick it up ;) - (I'm in Canada, not UK!)

I think that 2 sets is good enough, but 3 allows the GM to have a set on his side of the (beautiful) GM screen.

I got two sets, going to be getting another set maybe two.

In WFRP I think I ended up with (4) sets, but dice pools had a tendency to essplowd in size.

The challenge dice seem to be the limiting factor in EotE dice packs. That being said, I think 2 maybe 3 sets would suffice for the whole table. I nabbed the Beginner Box and a Dice pack and I think that's all I can see myself needing at this point.

Dice is more about want than need for me. For D&D I don't need 20 d20s, but I have around that many (maybe more -- I haven't actually counted them). :-)

I'm starting with 4 sets, same as WFRP. I'll use 'em.

cause someone else's hands could taint the roll. ;)

Finally, someone speaks Basic around here. Keep yer wookiee paws off my dice!
