You should buy Core/Deluxe set x2 and Force Pack(s) x1

By cephalgia, in Star Wars: The Card Game

I feel like if we just bump this once a week or so, it will save a lot of people a lot keyboard strokes.

Hahahaha. It is true this seems to be a commonly asked question for beginners to Star Wars LCG. I did my research when I learned about this game and never had to bother asking the question.

For those of you who are just beginning or thinking of getting into the game and want to know what to get, refer to the thread name.

I somewhat refused to buy the second core... I thought I would make it all right without it! And... wrooong!

I had a great game today using my second core, Luke and Yoda were popping up like popcorn's one at the time of course, they are Elite popcorn's : ) .I recomend this topic title x2 !

Haha. Yup. Another benefit of having 2 core sets is in case one box gets destroyed, (my original has been messed up a bit towards one area on the bottom) you can just put everything in the other box.

Personally, I'd like to see Force Packs that do not have duplicate objective sets. I'd like the freedom to purchase duplicate objective sets if and when I want duplicates.

Yes, I know that having duplicates allows you greater statistical chances of drawing the card that you need. But again, I want to be able to make that choice for myself as far as whether or not I have duplicate sets and which duplicates I may or may not have.

I think you are the only one. When AGoT only gave you 1 copy of each card per pack, people complained because you had to buy 3 to have playsets. I imagine most people would complain if they had to buy two force packs every time to have playsets as well.

I have not yet played A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. Does it use objective sets the same as the Star Wars LCG?

If you add cards individually (like Android: Netrunner, which I do own), then I can see how having only one of each card in the Data Packs would frustrate people. But in the Star Wars LCG, because you are dealing with full objective sets as cohesive groups, you are adding/removing 6 cards at a time, so that changes the selection process significantly. (This, by the way, is one of the things that I love about the Star Wars LCG.)

To each his own, but again, I'd like the freedom to make my own choice regarding this.

Its free-form like Netrunner. And I know what you mean, I'd personally be fine with more sets to play with, even if it cost more, but the vast majority of people arent. I get a lot of mileage out of my cards and would be willing ot pay a little more for them. I also have a steady job and enough money for that. I know some people in my area that are miffed that they have to buy 2 EoD, even though they know how much cool stuff is packed therein, mostly because stuff like that is generally perceived as a "money grab", even if it really benefits the players in the long run.

That all being said, Im fine with the way it is too, and am happy with how FFG has managed it.

I created this thread with the intent to put an end to questioning what people should purchase. Your post, and the subsequent posts it received, have somewhat derailed the thread from its original intentions (educating people on the quantity of what you will need to purchase if you decide to invest in this game).

That's not to say people aren't entitled to their own opinion, it's just to say that this thread had one purpose in mind - informing everyone of 'do I need to buy x2 of Core set' or not, as that question gets asked A LOT online by new players.

Back to topic:

The Core/Deluxe sets will only give players ONE copy of each Objective set. The Force Packs gives you one copy of Objectives that are restricted to 'one per deck' and two copies of non-restricted Objectives. Players can play with, at most, two copies of an Objective. Thus, purchasing two copies of Core/Deluxe sets and one copy of Force Packs will give players all the cards they can legally use in deckbuilding.

If you're interested in playing competitively/in tournaments, you will need to buy Core/Deluxe x2, Force Packs x1.

That's funny, because you made it look like I said something other than what I actually said! Ha ha!

Sorry, I took it as you giving him attitude. I appologize if I was wrong. The Internet is still a difficult place to communicate without vocal and facial expressions.

Anyhoo, yes, on topic. 2 Cores, one of each Force pack. And there is very little wastage with 2 Cores. AGoT and A:NR make you buy 3 Cores if you want a COMPLETE play set, but there is tons of wastage. Many players just buy 2 and stay at that. We are lucky with this game.

No problem, Saej. Life is too short Forums are too inconsequential to take things too seriously. (And too unpredictable)

Here, I'll use a facial expression, too... :P

Sorry...back on topic...they're watching...

I am obsessive about having playsets of all available cards for a given game. I also like to know that my opponent has access to all possible cards. This is one of the many reasons LCGs are better than CCG/TCGs.

I pointed this out elsewhere, but I'll say it again here as it's appropriate for this thread:

We actually don't know if you'll need x2 all of the Deluxe sets. We do know it for Edge of Darkness. I have a suspicion that you won't need 2 copies of Balance of the Force whenever it eventually shows up.

We will find that out in the coming months hopefully.

Amen. I have to have all the current playsets and as many copies as I'm allowed! And while EoD does require two copies purchased to get all the cards allowable, it's still cheaper than any of the other LCGs. Actually it is pretty much the cheapest of all Fantasy Flight games. The ones that keep having releases at least.

Don't all of the LCGs still have regular releases? I count CoC's deluxe expansions as "regular releases" when I ask this.

We will find that out in the coming months hopefully.

You do not need to buy 2 Balance of the Force decks- announcement was made today. The Challenge Decks are prebuilt and work toward that multiplayer function nicely. As for the 6 new objective sets, they are all "Limit 1 per objective Deck."

n/m this was the wrong place to post

Bump

Bumping as well, as it would have answered my question had I seen it earlier. :)

Well I made the mistake of clogging the forum with yet another "should i buy so and so packs." Though it did just get bumped after I created the thread.

Regardless consider this post yet another bump and a thank you for the clarification regarding how data packs work. I was entering my decision to purchase the Star Wars LCG with mild trepidation, but now I'm left relieved knowing I won't have to double up on force packs.
