Proper Etiquette for displaying actions from cards.

By Bolder, in X-Wing Rules Questions

What do you guys usually do to display actions from cards? Such as marksmanship. I know you can "say" you performed a card action but for the sake of remembering and representing it what do you guys use? Focus and evade have tokens so I was using the mission tracking tokens.

What I do is "tap" the card, turning it 90 degrees clockwise just like you would do with a land card for Magic the Gathering.

For marksmanship I put a red die on the base with the focus eye up. As soon as you attack you remove it and use the die in the roll.

I do the same thing as Pierre for Marksmanship. Or a green die for the defensive R2. Most other cards resolve as you choose them so no real need to show anything. The one thing our gaming group is good about is for swarm tactics. We always make sure to choose who gets the bonus before the first person starts their combat phase. "Ok, you're done moving? Here's my this guy here has the swarm." If they forget, tough titons.

I have glass bead tokens for various things. I use light blue for shield tokens and a red one for Marksmenship. I use white glass beads for everyone within R1 of Howl just so I don't forget the re-roll.

I just place the card itself by the model. Since I usually run large ships, there's always room on the ship's base. On the occasions where I'm using it on a small ship in the middle of a traffic jam, I'll lay it on top of the model.

For marksmanship at least I just toss a focus token onto the marksmanship card itself. For other actions with lasting effects though, I don't usually do anything fancy and don't usually have much trouble.

I like to use the "tracking" tokens from the core set. They are unique and also green colored like other actuons that would normally be cleared at the end of the round.

I also use the turn markers to track non-normal actions.

You could also use the number tokens if you really wanted to pair them (leave one on the card and place one when it's used).

I use crit tokens, I never actually use them for what the game intends them.

+1 for tapping the card (turning it 90 degrees) - it's a pretty universally recognized card game mechanic and requires no other tokens.

@magadizer & mege: me too. Tracking tokens are excellent for that sort of thing. Though I've seen both the methods of tapping the card and putting the card onto the mat used in our gaming group. The tracking token is easy for me because they're sitting in my tray of tokens that I bring to every match I play.

The only bad thing about "tapping" or putting dice on the card is that most of the other actions involve placing a token on the playing surface. This makes a visual representation of the state of the ships in the game in the same playing field. Tapping or placing markers on the side of the playing surface makes it harder to remember what actions were taken, and make decisions during the combat phase.

The Focus token from SW LCG fits in well visually, and it even has a crosshairs of sorts on it. Great for Marksmanship.

When I play R2-F2 (think that's the right one) I place it next to the model.

I place the card on the board. No confusion then.

I like the ID token approach - putting one numbered token next to the ship and the other matching token on the appropriate card. Really helps with larger (150 points +) furballs.

I place the card on the board. No confusion then.

the same for me

I use the tracking tokens as well. The field gets badly cluttered if you start putting cards on it, and if you keep the cards on the side of the table there is no visual reference by the ship unless you use a tracking token.

Hmm.. is there a list of Actions which might need marking? The ones I can see are

  • R2-F2
  • Marksmanship
  • Expose

Some like Squad Leader happen instantly and probably don't need marking on the board, tapping card so you can't do it a second time is probably enough.
