Sense Power - Range Upgrade

By wraith428, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey all,

Want to make sure I'm reading this correctly.

From p.281 under the Range Upgrade for the Sense power...

"Spend [Force point icon] to increase the range at which the character senses living things by a number of range bands equal to the number of Range upgrades purchased."

If I read that correctly it only applies to the Basic Power's ability to sense living things within short range. It has no effect on the range of the Basic Power's ability to sense emmotional state or the Control upgrades ability to sense surface thoughts.

Wraith428

Yes that would be correct.

OK... then to use a movie example... where Vader and Luke engaged in the battle on the Death Star in RotJ where Vader reads Luke's thoughts about Leia. They were not in melee striking range IIIRC.

Another question. Can you break read surface thoughts as an NPC by using a Maneuver to Disengage? (Silly I know but I'm interested in seeing how this stuff is supposed to work.)

Wraith428

Perhaps it will be included in the Jedi Book?

Seems to me they (Vader and Luke) weren't much more than short range from each other, which I believe is the basic range for a majority of Sense's abilities. Not with my book right now so can't check.

The Sense tree synopsis for Range Upgrade is "Spend LS to increase power's range by a number of range bands = upgrades purchased." It's on the opposite page that it specifically mentions only the sense lifeforms part.

Personally, as a GM I'd be fine with Range Upgrades also being applied to sensing emotions or surface thoughts. As was said, it's something we see in the movies (albeit by a powerful Sith Lord), so there's G-canon justification for that sort of thing.

I completely agree with Dono. It is hardly game-breaking to let them sense emotions, or even surface thoughts, of multiple people, from longer ranges, or both. Especially if they get a bunch of different surface thoughts at once and have to sift through them. Wait until they use Sense on a bunch of thugs, and I tell them the things that the four guys think, though they can't tell exactly who said what.

"These guys look like chumps."
"Man, I'm hungry."
"I don't want to die."
"Help me."

Thanks.

Actually, for the Force-user I'm playing in an upcoming campaign, I'm picturing his usage of Sense (right now just has the basic power and 'danger sense' upgrade) as being akin to RJD version of Sherlock Holmes in the Guy Ritchie movies, only without the training/focus (currently) to always be able to properly narrow down the necessary information from the superfluous stuff like what you mentioned.

From p.281 under the Range Upgrade for the Sense power...

"Spend [Force point icon] to increase the range at which the character senses living things by a number of range bands equal to the number of Range upgrades purchased."

The next sentence says: "The user may active this multiply times, increasing the range by this number each time."

I am not sure if I understand this correct. If a PC rolls 3 Force Points, he can spend 1 FP for activating Sense Power and 2 FP to increase the range by the number of Range upgrades purchased. So, if he has one upgrade, he may sense up to Long range with 2 FP. If he has two upgrades, he may sense beyond Extreme range with 2 FP. Is this correct?

Is this correct?

That is correct.

Yup. With enough pips, you can get out to Extreme Range on the Planetary scale.

Which I think was also featured in the movies, between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and between Luke and Darth Vader.
