Dutch Vander - Acquire Target Lock on a different ship.

Dutch Vander states ""After acquiring a target lock, choose another friendly ship at Range 1-2. The chosen ship may immediately acquire a target lock."
We have always played that the 'friendly ship' has to acquire the target lock on the same ship that Vander does. It makes good sense, seems thematic, looks good. But where in the rules does it say that it can't be a different ship?

i was just told there is no reason the 'friendly ship' couldn't lock on to any ship it wants, within the rules. This doesn't seem very thematic but it does fit the rules.

Is that everyone's opinion?

The ship granted the lock can lock on to any ship that it could legally target lock.

Note that there are circumstances in which the receiving ship cannot legally lock on to the same ship as Dutch.
