Can you choose to voluntarily fail a skill check?

By junebug41, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I'm sure this has been covered, but I can't find a way to narrow a search down enough. Quick example: an Arkham encounter says "Make a Will -2 check or you are escorted to the street". You want to go to the street, but your will is set to 4. Do you have to roll the two dice and accept the result? Or can you just choose to fail?

I couldn't find a rule or errata to address this. Thanks for any help.

No, you have to make the roll. Otherwise Nightgaunts would never actually get killed, they'd almost always be voluntarily failed and used as short-cuts to gates.

Point is your character is still somewhat independent from your decisions.

yes you have to do it.

the best word on AH enc cards?..

may!

The real point is that the characters have an innate survival skill. Try going rock climbing, getting up really high, and letting go of the wall so the belayer can catch you. Not as easy as it sounds.
