Interesting Contacts

By jareddm, in Dark Heresy

I thought it might be a good idea to come up with some interesting, pre-made contacts for players to use if they want to pick one. here's one that I've been thinking of for a little while.

Magnolius Brishic

An ex-paramilitary doomsday theorist and overall "end of the world" nutcase. For years, Magnolius had believed that the hives themselves would come crashing down around him, leaving the survivors in a feral, decimated wasteland. Magnolius had been preparing for a long time and had planned, built, and filled a massive weapons depot in a warehouse he had owned in the mid-hive. Recently, catastrophe hit. Not the apocalyptic form Magnolius was waiting for, but a pretty severe riot that raged through the hive nontheless. Looters managed to break into his prized weapons depot, ransaking every last gun, from dozens of cases of las pistols, to massive tank-leveling rocket launchers. Luckily for Magnolius, and the rest of the hive, none of the weapons were loaded. Ammo was stored at a different location deep in the lower-hive. Unfortunately, this left Magnolius with several kilotons of ammunition and not a single gun to fire any of it! After the events of the riot, he realized it might be better to take a different approach. He's not selling off as much of his ammo stocks as he can, little by little to not draw attention, until he has enough for a one-way ticket off the planet. His feeling that something terrible will befall the planet hasn't left him, but he's still sharp enough to know when something's not working. His stores of ammunition are still packed to the brim and include some of the rarest shells and bolts ever made in the imperium.

Possible Connections:

-One of the acolytes is a fellow doomsday theorist and has had dealings with Magnolius before over any number of contingency plans in the event of an apocalyptic nightmare.

-An acolyte was involved in ending the riots that swept through the hive. The acolyte managed to trace some of the missing weapons back to Magnolius and is now recieving favors in exchange for keeping his mouth shut.

Feldo Boggins

Feldo is a ratling that's part of the clandestine organization known as the Hobbitus assassins guild. He seems to be a quiet lad and he has a habit of constantly playing with a ring hung on a chain from his neck. He refers to it as "my valuable". Feldo is good at his job. Rarely do his targets ever get to see his face before shuffling off their mortal coil. Feldo has an unreasoning hatred of gretchen and orks. He will go out of his way to spark a fight and then proceeds to cut them down with his power blade, "Bite". He wears a cameoline cloak and is quite adept at remaining hidden. In those times where Feldo does get into trouble, inevitably a high ranking member of the Sanctioned Imperial Psykers, Mandalf, will come to his rescue.

It seems that Mandalf owes Feldo a great debt for some past service rendered to him by Feldo.

Possible Connections:

The acolytes may owe Feldo some money. He's quite the good gambler.

Feldo is hired to assassinate the same target that the party is investigating, leading to some discussion and perhaps a joint venture.

Borgir Damascin

Previously an Inquisitorial agent of obvious talent, Borgir was quite an agent and bon vivant. Originally hailing from a career in the Arbites his law enforcement experience was coloured by his compassion for his fellow (loyal) Imperial citizens. He was known as a strict, efficient yet fair Arbitrator and this was the reason he was recruited into the Inquisition. Borgir got results, and it was always with minimal innocent casualties. However, after an event that he won't talk about unless sorely pressed Borgir lost his nerve and requested honourable discharge, which was granted. His souveniers he took away from this was a missing larynx, grey thinning hair which matches his grey eyes along with a skittish nature. As a bonus he was granted a rather generous stipend which he chose of his own free will to reinvest in an old disused cathedral with a mind to create a safehouse for those requiring somewhere to run to ground. Inside the cathedral is devided up into makeshift (yet spotlessly clean) cells. Policy within the safehouse is that you are locked into your cells (fully furnished insofar that everything required is contained within each one) and if you want to exit/enter you have to wait until the corridors are clear before he (or his staff) let you out. This is to protect the identities of those staying there.

Borgir has enough funding to run the house regardless, but as courtesy it is expected that a donation be made in order to discourage those wanting free board and lodgings rather than a safe place to recuperate. He can also (if asked) see if there are others interested in sales of items to other patrons in the house. This increases the availabilty of potential buyers of non-heretical goods. Dodgy items will likely get you reported in, regardless of whether it puts you in danger.

((This is a current NPC in my campaign which you're free to use. Sorry about the sketchy writeup but I've just realised I'm very tired and not making much sense. I may rewrite this in the morning)).

Sister Tzarina

“Animals, that is all you and your friends are without the divine guidance of him on terra, prone to wander in dark places. Given half a chance a heretic like you would squander their humanity by rolling around in the muck for nothing more than a few baubles and temporal power, misguided into thinking that is their human right. Today you will scream like an animal and tell me who sold you that lie… oh yes, yes you will scream quite a lot.
Animals tend to do that because they have no dignity or self control to tell them otherwise.”

Tzarina is something of an enigmatic Sororitas of the Diologous Order who’s been stationed in the Calixus sector for the better part of 10-15 years as best as anyone can remember (most people deny knowing her altogether if they know what's good for them), mostly based out of Scintilla as a corps diplomatique of considerable oversight power which goes all the back to the terran high lords and one of the few people able to wander freely through the sector governor’s residences and courts with any regularity. Lord Hax doesn’t particularly like Sister Tzarina poking around but understands her role as being one of a mediator and if necessary, regulator of imperial creed in the sector, almost without exception the noble houses through the sector fear her greatly and for very good reason. It’s not entirely possible to lie to her with any kind of surety and there isn’t much she doesn’t seem to know of importance happening amongst the upper echelons of society, trading houses and to some extent any criminal connections to them
A puritan through and through and something of a quiet extremist whose loyalty to the imperium borders on the fanatical even if she never overstates that fact as it would be impolite and uncouth. But she has all the time in the world to seek out those who would bring ruin to imperial laws, credos, debase the emperor’s holy rule and dabble in the grey areas that Inquisitors seem to work in sometimes. Being also one of the few individuals to equal an inquisitor in terms of political, legal clout, they tend to see her as a rival and for the more extreme radicals, also something of a smiling and ever charismatic threat to any habitual line-stepping. For acolytes, it’s probably best in most cases to hide the fact they know Tzarina from their inquisitor unless they are of a equally fanatical imperialist or from a Sororitas background themselves, she has a number of uncanny abilities to dredge information out of people, make them do what she wants (even if they don’t want too) and compromise any loyalties they have… that is, if they want to ‘progress’ very far in the inquisition or for that matter, any other organisation they happen to belong too.
While Tzarina never flaunts her ability to ‘make things happen’ behind the scenes and for all intents and purposes appears to be a stunningly beautiful 5th wheel rolling around the mechanics of imperial society without an apparent great deal of power, its not power she’s interested in and never has been. Coming to Tzarina without anything of importance in order to obtain something of equal importance is useless, unless you have something to tell her that she might like to know, she’ll quite politely have very little time to divulge anything of note aside from quaint formalities and pleasantries.
That is unless of course you can do something for her in exchange for information, if it comes down to such a mission as that, you’re probably best to look for other sources, likewise, be prepared for what you want to know, for what she knows will get most people killed by any number of factions.

Tzarina is effectively a “Bene Gesserit” reverent mother in terms of her personal abilities, you can’t lie or hide much from her and she’ll quickly figure out if you’re an ignorant peon probably even before you do. Ware her voice, she’s quite capable of Engram Imprinting someone with not much more than a few words without their knowledge in casual circumstances or in anger, forcing them to submit to whatever she needs immediately. There are no psychic powers here at work, digging into her connections in the Adeptus Sororitas that she belongs to and their machinations will get you killed quicker than sticking the gun in your own mouth.
Consider all Forbidden Lores and Knowledge skills as being with an 82% base chance of having by accessing her ‘other memory’ along with any particularly interesting happenings in the sector’s politics with the same level of surety. She has a writ from a high lord of terra which gives her full authority of them in terms of upholding Imperial law, creed and maintenance of those aspects of the imperium along with a few other things…
Her two primary retainers, a old Squat engineer called Maclaren McGunn who possess an almost unsurpassed technical knowledge free of Adeptus Mech bias (61% base chance to tell you fairly much anything about tech things) and a fully trained and equipped Culexus temple assassin at her call (somewhere nearby, probably advisable not to look too closely for him, you wont like what you find…) called Jan 418 who tends to floating around at a discrete distance and simply has the ability to kill most anything living with about 99% surety and anything psyker or warp based with about 100% surety!

Price: 150pts
Tzarina is bought as a contact with the Special Powers due to her abilities, power and clout, capable of finding out most anything of an esoteric scholarly or political nature and Maclaren’s own skills which are expertly formidable in the technical fields, but with the added bonus that you don’t have to listen to someone rabbiting on garbage about machine spirits and crap, he just tells you how it actually works.
But she is also considered Dangerous , because she’s everything that’s considered completely bad about being extremely good in the ultra-faithful Imperium of man and has a proverbial ‘big stick’ that you’ll **** well respect to the same extent of looking down the barrel of the inferno pistol of your inquisitor. Because if you hang around her long enough, chances are you will be, either literally or figuratively.
Having additional contacts which may have information she’d like to know makes getting information out of her easier, as does being scrupulously polite and completely devoted to the emperor, (or being in good standings with the Sororitas or a member yourself) but you have been warned…
