milk of the poppy and duplicate

By Daenarys, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I was playing a game the other day in which my character The Laughing Storm had a duplcate on him. My opponent put Milk of the Poppy on him.

At one point he had a military claim for three and he stated that i could not save the Laughing Storm with a duplicate because it had milk of the poppy on him and could not trigger the save response by discarding a duplicate, was this correct ???

Milk of the Poppy blanks the text box of the character it is attached to. The save gained from a duplicate is not a part of that character's text box, it's a "gained" ability (from having a duplicate). You can use that duplicate regardless of whether your character has a milk of the poppy on him.

These gained abilities are granted by another card or effect; examples include the Wildling agenda that gives wildlings stealth, Winterfell Castle that gives stark characters +1 STR, etc - none of these are affected by milk of the poppy, because the card granting the character the ability is not in any way impaired.
