First Play should I use Imperial or Imperial II?

By Gopherlove, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

So I've played a 1 game of TI3 before a while ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I recently picked up my own copy and this Friday I've organized a six player. While getting myself prepared to teach the game I can across people had the same problem with Imperial I being an auto-pick and the next player picking Initiative so they can get it next turn. I was wondering for people who have never played the game before should I keep Imperial I in or switch it out of Imperial II and use the show all objectives from the start rule set?

Everyone loves to go for the win and I'm pretty sure they would quickly get into the routine of picking 8 then picking 1.

Also any other advice or optional rules that are good for first time player please let me know.

Thank you in advanced.

I'd use Imperial II.

Imperial I can (and will) create a pattern in the Strategy cards choosing. The first player that can grab Imperial II will and the next player will try to get Initiative so on his next turn he can grab Imperial II. This pattern will circle the table so everyone will get a shot at the "free" 2 VPs.

What Imperial II is doing is opening the game a lot more and letting players play more against each other than against the game. Now players will tech up more, discuss more, trade more, vote more, conquer more and battle more.

Replacing Imp I with Imp II will let you play the game "as it should be" imo.

You're **** lucky to have a groupe willing to play TI3...i've yet to convince my groupe to invest time in this game...

I strongly recommend Imperial II as well, and obviously the official "AoE" (Age of Empire) Optional Rule. This helps newer players as they can see the Objectives and make strategies on how to score them.

I concur.

I would suggest using the Shattered Empire SC cards instead, but I'm guessing that's either not an option or you prefer to play with the original SC set at least once :P

You recommend using ALL SE cards for the first game? Good idea!

In line with previous posts, go for Bureaucracy instead of the Imperials, if you can.

If you have access to the alternate Strategy Cards from the Shattered Empire expansion, they are so much better than the set you get in the base game. I'm guessing you have access to all the alternative strategy cards since you have Imperial II to play with.
