Star Wars LCG: The Balance of the Force multiplayer expansion and next cycle

By deathmarch, in Star Wars: The Card Game

Hi there everybody! I don't know about anybody else, but I'm starting to feel quite annoyed how the Balance of the Force multiplayer expansion and the next cycle haven't been announced yet. I actually thought that they would've been announced in June at least since the last Force pack is at the printers and is due out in August. This would've meant then that the next cycle and/or expansion would then be out in September, but that doesn't appear to be the case and it looks like it's going to be later than that. I guess I'm feeling this way because I'm really looking forward to seeing where they'll be taking the game and I have such a great interest in the Star Wars universe. I just hope that they make an announcement soon. Is anybody else feeling this way?

I'm not annoyed but I am surprised nothing was announced at all in June. They always announce stuff at least 3 months out. Seemed odd we never saw anything. I expected it to be the Balance of the Force for September.

Hi Toqtamish! Thanks for the reply. I was also surprised that nothing was announced in June. I suppose I just need to settle down a bit and be more patient. I do hope that they don't leave it for too much longer though.

I'm also very curious what the new cycle will be in september.

Is it possible that the new cycle will not start in september but later ?????? :( :( :( :(

I have a feeling that they will make an announcement for the next cycle after the release of Edge of Darkness. But whatever the release is, I hope it revolves around Endor- we need more ewoks.

Hi Sobe Cin! I wouldn't be surprised if you're right about an announcement coming after the release of Edge of Darkness. That way the multiplayer expansion and next cycle won't come into conflict with and take away from the attention of Edge of Darkness. I just hope that there isn't too much of a gap between the Escape for Hoth force pack and the multiplayer expansion. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I am excited to see the multiplayer variant(s).

Being a Lord of the Rings LCG 'veteran', I suppose I'm used to huge delays between releases, and long periods of nothing. But given the attention Star Wars has had so far, it does seem a bit odd that they're quiet on upcoming releases. If I remember right, the rule book stated both Edge of Darkness and Balance of the Force would be out in the first half of 2013. Nothing to be surprised about FFG missing an expected release, but at least we know lots about the former. That there is nothing at all except the name about the latter does make me think something is perhaps afoot. Maybe they're redesigning the whole thing. It does make sense that they would space out both expansions though, so that one doesn't distract from the other.

I struggle to get even one person to play this game with me, so the idea of multiplayer holds no real attraction for me, but I do like to know what's going on! Hopefully it will be similar to the recent Warhammer multiplayer box, and the cards can still be used in the one-on-one game. Having lots of cards in Game of Thrones that depend on having more than one player just makes them useless to me (yes - FFG should design their games to fit around me, goddammit! )

Really? I find it easy to get anyone to play Star Wars with me! I let them borrow decks. My real problem is finding Netrunner players. :/

They might be saving the announcement for Gen Con, but I could be wrong. It would be cool to get the announcement sooner then later. . .

Highly unlikely. This week Edge should show as shipping now and a new product announcement should be coming as well for whatever is coming out after the Hoth cycle ends.

haha netrunner players in the twin cities are a dime a dozen, so are SW players but we all meet at different shops and play in clicks of 3-5

I have a bad feeling about this...

I have the same problem getting people to play. But I think that is more because the people that I wind up being around the most don't play games. I do have some friends that I have recently connected with but schedules are tight at times. And I am teaching my son. But to get a person I already know play the game, that is very difficult.

If I was a betting man (and I am not), I would guess that they are trying to following the original series. In that we have (not an all inclusive list as I might miss something):

  • STAR WARS : A NEW HOPE
    • SAW - Tatooine, Yavin 4, Alderaan (briefly)
    • MENTIONED - Dantooine
  • STAR WARS : THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
    • SAW - Hoth, Dagobah, Bespin
    • MENTIONED - Ord Mantell
  • STAR WARS : RETURN OF THE JEDI
    • SAW - Tatooine, Endor, Coruscant (briefly in special edition)
    • MENTIONED - ??

That is all I can think of off the top of my head (so feel free to add to this anything I missed or add extra stuff for the expanded universe which I am not up on).

With this, I would guess that BESPIN would be next followed by ENDOR. After that, it becomes anyone's guess as to what they will name the cycles after but I am thinking that the might do a CORUSCANT and pull from the prequels and the expanded universe to provide some flavor and settings but not actually do the prequels (although honestly, I would like the prequels getting really cool Jedi and stuff would be fun).

In Return Of The Jedi, Vader and The Emperor mention Sullust...

Vader: "What of the reports of the rebel fleet massing near Sullust?"

The Emperor: "It is of no concern; soon the alliance will be crushed and young Skywalker will be one of us."

If you don't know what race are from Sullust, Lando's co-pilot in The Falcon is a Sullustan, named Nien Nunb.

Would be cool to see more EU.

I'm glad someone mentioned Sullust!! Should be interesting to see if we'll get some Sullustans other than Nien and Ten Nunb. Den Dhur, maybe? Hm...

I think it might not be as much about trying to get people into the game as it is about finding people with the type of mind that craves cognitively intense games, such as many of those crafted by FFG. After being a part of the AGoT and SW LCG communities, I can say that, although we come from different places, and are different in many ways, it is undeniable that there is a common thread there, and I think it is the draw towards cognitively complex and intense tasks that require marathon concentration sessions.

Many people don't like games that require the sort of effort that it takes to become an excellent SW LCG player, for instance. They like sitting around playing things like Apples to Apples, etc.

i see

tatooine

cloud city

endor

as definite expansion sets

then they could do a space expansion (focusing on DS and DS 2 battles)

All of these make sense to me, but I imagine they'll go to Cloud City before Tatooine in order to follow the timeline after leaving Hoth... and a space themed cycle could probably fit in anywhere.

There is no evidence to suggest that they intend on following the timeline of the movies.

As an aside: with the art of Xizor & Guri, as well as the Viper fighter found in the RPG books, I believe that we will be getting at least an OS or two from the Shadows of the Empire - if not an expansion or cycle.

#1. Rob Martin is awesome, thank you for the Spoiler Spreadsheet.

#2. Agree on both counts. They are not following any timeline chronologically with the movies, otherwise we'd have seen Tatooine first and certainly Death Star before Hoth.

Also, we already have a Black Sun card with Outer Rim Space Pirates having the Black Sun trait. So, I agree with you there, I expect to see more Shadows of the Empire cards including Xizor. I'm so clueless about EU, but he I have heard of and Black Sun just sounds cool. I'm not sure if we'd have a full expansion or cycle devoted to it -- at least not anytime soon anyway.

I have a bad feeling about this...

I also have a bad feeling about this MarthWMaster. I think that something has gone wrong somewhere with production or some other area and that there's going to be a delay with the next deluxe expansion and cycle. It annoys me when I see other products being announced and yet nothing is being announced for the Star Wars LCG. I just wish that FFG would announce something soon or at least inform us what is going on that may be causing any delays.

I did read an article that Lucasfilm (now under Disney) is re-evaluating all external contracts and terminating many of them due to directions that Disney does not want to invest in or because Disney intends to take the item in house. This is coupled with the termination of the entire LucasArts division bringing only key people over to the Disney Interactive (or whatever the division is called) and looking to farm out any other merchandise they have decided they want to keep moving forward on. This is why Star Wars 1313 has been canceled. Star Wars The Clone Wars has been canceled. And the live action Star Wars Television series has been canceled.

Of course, this does not mean that there are problems here. They just might be in a holding cycle as Disney/Lucasfilm do this reevaluating. Or it could be the forerunner of bad news. We will see.

They just had a bunch of announcements made regarding edge of the empire (rpg) as well as an x-wing preview.

I think FFG is simply trying to not overload its SW fan base with news on all their related lines of products.

We should be seeing some news on the next cycle within a couple weeks.

Also, it could be that they are waiting to get some lessons learned from the Warhammer experience with their multiplayer expansion and are not fully ready to reveal the SW one. Although it was announced right along with the core set (since it's mentioned in the rulebook), I don't think Balance of the Force was already fully designed at the time (maybe not even yet as of now either), so they are probably refining it.

As for any conspiracy theory involving Disney's purchase of LucasArt, there's nothing giving them credence. The basic approach Disney took is to only keep movie-related production control and then license everything else. Disney has no experience in producing card games, and they have it already licensed to FFG, so why should we be worrying? The videogame example is different, in that LucasArt was developing the games themselves and Disney decided they were not videogame developers, hence now they are licensing it instead (didn't Ubisoft or some other company get a license deal already by the way?)
