You know you're playing Rogue Trader when

There is an administratum schism over whether your regiments are heavy cavalry or light aeronautica

Said schism devolves into open warfare

This is why scintilia is now classified a death world

The contest between the Missionary and the Explorator in which both of them claimed tribal xeno's worlds in order to prove who was better at spreading their doctrine has snowballed into the following events:

A schism within the AdMech over if Xeno's that worship the machine spirit properly are a tech-heresy or not.

A schism in the Ecclesiarchy over the idea of Xeno's revering humanity and worshiping the God-Emperor of Mankind above all others.

The Xeno Ecclesiarchy planet unleashing an orbital bombardment on the AdMech Xeno planet in an attempt to wipe out the heresy of non Emperor worshiping xenos.

The AdMech uniting in the face of this attack to declare war on the Ecclesiarchy ( No matter what their personal opinion of the Xeno's themselves, the AdMech isn't going to let the Ecclesiarchy bombard one of their worlds).

Xeno Ecclesiarchy planet gets wiped off the face of existence by the AdMech retaliation.

Ecciesiarchy starts gathering forces for a crusade against Mars with the intention of claiming its factories for the righteous.

When an Artificial Intelligence that was found becomes an officer in your crew - Second Lieutenant Alma - and eventually becomes a candidate for succession after the Rogue Trader dies.

When the Rogue Trader shoots the Arch-Militant in the face with a Melta Pistol because the Arch-Militant wanted better wages.

When an Explorator is played as, 'Scruffy, the Janitor', who took Scholastic Lore: Philosophy and half the time is, 'on break', when needed to do anything.

When an Arch-Militant who's a Space Marine fanboy tries to put the Armsmen through a Space-Marine-Esque training regime, that kills ~4,000 of them, and calls it a success because the few that survived are now really tough.

When asked by an Inquisitor, 'Why should you be kept alive? What use are you to me?', the Missionary (female character) responds, 'because I'm eye candy!'.

you are the commander of the Orphaned Sons

the Orphaned Sons are a blackshield warband with current strength being that of a legion battalion

when Bjorn talks about Leman Russ your first officer is able to truthfully say "That didn't happen. I would know, I was there."

this is why so many missionaries meet with "unfortunate accidents" in your fleet

when circumstances make the GM's only options:

1. extreme railroading

2. TPK

3. let the RT keep the Silver Ship as his flagship

I want details on how #3 became an option in the first place.

Also, the AdMech wants the RT to turn the Silver Ship over to them right about now.

The Inquisition is interested in getting their hands on it too.

Ditto any other Rogue Trader Dynasty.

Ditto any faction with a vague interest in technology. Loyalist, Chaos, Heretical, Heretek, etc.

They brought the spare geller field and over two decades of rations with them when they boarded.

I admire their initiative.

But you can always do a time-skip. Ships can end up left drifting for decades or centuries at a time undisturbed. And if the vessel is disturbed, say by just about any other faction, hilarity can ensue. ;)

a few hours on it and you can collect enough tech to get profit factor. time-skip a few weeks and they could probably kill the population of a boarding Kroozer. how do you manage to take them down in a way that doesn't have them burn all of their fate points?

Do you have a full write-up for these guys planned, it might have potential.

Planning on making them direct descendants of a HH blackshield group (of which Felix "Airborne Doom" Kron was a member), the missionary bit is because of the no gods, no masters rule.

Gotcha, hope to see what you do with them.

Do they have control of the silver ship's engines? Because gellar field will only keep them from being wiped out from the warp, it doesn't by itself stop the ship from drifting to wherever it likes for however long it likes. All the tech is useless if you can't safely leave when you want to. And weren't there enslavers on that ship to boot?

You know you're playing Rogue Trader when:

  • the GM has ever had to say (whether as an influential NPC or simply out of game) "Please don't catastrophically destabilise the economy of an entire (sub-)sector again . Seriously."
  • The word "sector" in the above sentence could ever be replaced with "segmentum"
  • There is a branch of the Administratum who has issued a warrant for their arrest and execution for crimes of Gross Fiscal Irresponsibility. The accompanying reward offered is a planet.
  • The Seneschal agrees that the Administratum is probably justified, but they've made enough money to buy the entire branch from the Adeptus Terra and have the AdMech turn them into high-end ballet servitors.
  • The plan is only vetoed because no-one thought the Mechanicum knew enough about ballet to program them properly...

When the insane Explorator says he's going to save the Imperium and the party says good luck. Three sessions of him only appearing out of the under ship bilge decks to requisition items from planets we visit the Rogue Trader goes down to see what he's doing because none of the ship systems are working.

He has a city of over two thousand scribes, acolytes, and assistants down there helping him convert the power from the engine into a giant machine that he created by reverse engineering force weapon technology to try and pull the Emperors mind back into his body, and he has an 8 page plan with an explanation of the technical details on how it should work. He's currently managed to annex the ship using weaponized servitors and is flying it to Terra.

The PC ship discovers a planet on the extreme fringes of Ultra/Macragge space,

It is called "North Ultramar" by the natives, but only on certain maps.

On maps from the Ultramarines, it is only shown as a discovered blip.

The PCs clear off the heretics living there. The explorator goes off on his own,

on a mad quest to find out why this is North Ultramar , but the Ultramarines

don't seem to give a **** about it.

So his archaeology doesn't really pay off to his liking, he seems to find

that the old colonists had founded the planet, and called it "North Ultramar"

from their own idea, hoping to impress Macragge and win the respect

and protection of the Ultramarines. Well they didn't. and the colony

languished and lapsed.

But there were a lot of interesting battles fought there, & many interesting units

had planted banners there at one time or another, so the explorator built

an R&R facility there, for shore leave of Imperial personnel, and he called it

  • Your actions single-handedly (well, mostly) cause the formation of a new Black Crusade in response and with minimal assistance cause it to stall until the Imperium gets its stuff sorted out

Edited by The_Shaman

your suicidal AM has the trait Diabolis Ex Machina (Death Seeker)

this has the effect of preventing his demise as long as he stays in character (AKA suicidal)

this is taken to the extreme when: armed with only melee weapons, he performs a 100m dash on and proceeds to slaughter a full legion devastator squad

after this he says "I seriously thought that would finally kill me"

If you have ever stopped a chaos dreadnought by injecting the grox in the larder with 'slaught.

All the grox....

When your best bet to repair your highly advanced starship is the archaeologist.

When starting a new colony on some far flung world is something to do when you are bored.

When you have to hide that you've enslaved some newly discovered alien race, not because of the slavery, but because you didn't wipe them out entirely.

Just to be clear I am stating archetypes not rank trees.

When the Rogue Trader is a contemptor dreadnought, the Arch-Militant is a Ork Kommando, the Astropath Transcendent is an Eldar Warlock, the Explorator is a jokero, the Missionary preaches about the Four-Armed Emperor, the Navigator is Kharn the Betrayer, the Seneschal is from a minor (pre-industrial) xeno race whose economy is based on slaving, and the Void Master is a Tau.

They are all PCs.

When after your void-master has ended up with a lot of tech skills and talents over the course of the game, the AdMech pop up and let you know that, due to them having by law the sole rights to technical knowledge, they are legally entitled and doctrinely required to confiscate his brain. "You can keep the body, though!", they reassure you.

You can't keep the body ):

Just to be clear I am stating archetypes not rank trees.

When the Rogue Trader is a contemptor.....

I love Black Crusade. wish my group would play it.

Archetype as in the roll they have in the crew, not the Black Crusade mechanic.
