I heard the core rules differ a little bit from the beginner box game. How easy will it be to convert the beginner box characters/ adventures to the core rules? Also, how easy do people think converting some of the old WEG D6 stuff over to this?
How easy to convert from beginner game?
There's really not much conversion work needed. There are a few extra rules, like Critical Hits and stuff, that aren't included in the Beginner Game, but otherwise, it's only Obligation (which makes the game a lot more interesting, in my opinion) and Motivation that will need to be converted. I think that's all… I'm currently running a game using the Beta book and we've just completed the Beginner Game adventures (Escape and Long Arm). I've got some players still using the pre-gens from the Beginner set and some that are from the Beta book, and they mesh really well.
I don't think you could conventionally "convert" d6 anything over to this. If anything, you could just reimagine it using this new system. That wouldn't be too hard.
And there are some rules and number changes between the starter kit and the launch, but it isn't too too much.
There are a lot of similarities to the old D6 system mechanically. For example Soak is Brawn + Armor Soak Rating, while in D6 you used a Strength Attribute with armor bonuses and rolled to see how much damage you soaked. The key difference is that in Edge of the Empire Soak is a static stat while in D6 it's a variable.
After running the game, I would say there is much more common ground between D6 Star Wars and Edge of the Empire than there ever was between D6 Star Wars and any of the D20 products, and there were conversions for all of that stuff.
Really the process of converting things over, from D6 to Edge of the Empire, or Edge of the Empire to D6 is really a matter of seeing what both systems have to offer.
I never felt that D20 was an all too effective system for roleplaying Star Wars. It was basically built from the ground up as a minitures game and most of the rules centered around Combat. RPGs evolve over time, that's why Wizards of the Coast is working on a 5th edition of Dungeons and Dragons. The problem with D20 for people who played the WEG Star Wars is that D20 Star Wars was not an evolution of D6 Star Wars at all. D20 Star Wars is a Dungeon and Dragons Campaign Setting.
While the Edge of the Empire is also it's own animal, it feels like a direction that West End Games might have eventually gone in.
The pilot and knowledge skills are also split in the core game but combined in the beginner game.
It's also worth pointing out that the talent trees in the Beginner Game don't sync up with the talent trees in the full game.

I knew this was coming and is pretty much the reason we put our game on hold. We play around 5 to 6 sessions with the pre-gens and they have advanced in a bunch of areas. I'm worried of how much work it will take to update the character to the main rules.
It honestly won't really change a whole lot. If anything, you might just consider refunding everyone's EXP that they have spent on everything and have them start from scratch. Some of the costs have changed as well, so make sure you refund the XP that they had spent in the beginner book.
I am stupid in love with this system for these reasons :
1) Building off the beginners set is easy, even with the disparity between some of the talent tress etc, and
2) converting the older adventures from both the D6 and D20 versions on the fly is ridiculously simple! The only prep is reading the adventure!
