Questions about ICE, please!

By GreenFlame, in Android: Netrunner Rules Questions

Hi everybody, new player here

I've played around 15 games with the core set, but today I found myself with these questions:

1- Can you do a Run against a server without ICE when you have no Icebreakers?

2- Can you do a Run against a server with ICE without Icebreakers? (to see what is the ICE or to force the Corp to use it)

3- The values of strenght in both ICE and ICEBREAKERS are only for purposes of the Icebreaker having the chance to break the subroutine? Or an Icebreaker must have equal or superior strenght to an ICE to go THROUGH it?

I mean, for example, the Runner runs against HQ, protected with the ICE that has strenght 4 and Trace 3 as subroutine (Hunter?). The Runner has an Icebreaker of strenght 2, so he doesn't have the strenght to interact with the ICE, so the subroutine is activated. Then, there are no more subroutines, but the strenght of the Icebreaker is lower than the ICE's. Does he still pass this ICE ?

Thank you very much in advance!

Good questions! Here's my thoughts:

1. Yes, you can make those runs. You don't require Icebreakers to make a run, just to defeat any Ice there. In this case, unless the Corporation player plays an event that would stop you, the run succeeds.

2. Yes, you can make a run against a server protected by Ice even if you have no Icebreakers. As you said, you can do that to force a Corporation player to either rez an Ice to stop you or let you go on. Obviously, this is not a good idea if the Ice is already rezzed.

3. Long answer. To defeat an Ice, your Icebreaker needs to both have a strength equal or better than it, and then use an ability to break subroutines on the Ice. If you don't have any abilities that target that type of Ice, or are too weak, then the Ice uses it's subroutines to hurt you. Now this is where it get's tricky. Most, but not all, Ice will have a "End the Run" subroutine. If you don't break this one, the Ice will end your run. However, there are some Ice that will hurt you, but won't actually end your run. In this case, you either proceed to the next piece of Ice, or if it was the last/only Ice to that server, it's considered a successful run.

Hope that answers your questions!

You can jack out of the run after each piece of ice and just before accessing cards. If you do, the run is not successful.

You always pass the ICE unless the ICE has an "End the Run" subroutine *and* that subroutine is not broken.
