Rank 2 and Career Transition

By DurakBlackaxe, in WFRP Rules Questions

I did a search and didn't find an answer I could understand.

What i understand

10 advances = full career

1 extra advance = dedication bonus

10-19xp = rank 2

20 - 29 = rank3

What i need to understand is this. When i have 8 xp i buy the below.

If i obtain

1 action card

1 talent

1 skill/specialization

1 wound threshold

and a non career advance costing 4 advances.

The rulebook says non-career advances do not count as advances spent towards completing the characters current career.

So i need 6 more advances + 1 to get dedication bonus so i would need 7 more xp. Which make a total of 15 xp making me rank 2 in first career.

Have I got this correct or am I missing something?

Would this rank 2 mean anything, do people treat me differently?

I know after getting dedication bonus i have to change careers. Which could cost another 4xp.

You got it right

It means for example that you can train skills up to rank 2, and that you can acces spells of rank 2 without penalties.

Not necessarily unless the GM rules otherwise

The cost in xp for changing careers equals 4 - the number of common traits between the two careers, up to a minimum of 1 xp (0 for Reiklanders)

Ah,I didnt know that, thought you had to have second career.

Thank you for replying, these answers clear everything up. Until I thought about it .

Another Question for you. If i at character creation trained a career skill. Say Weapon Skill. So its rank 1.
As your character gets more xp, he can train one skill per career up to his rank. So until i am rank 2, the max weapon skill can be is rank 1.

So if i become rank 2. I can train a creation skill to rank 2 as i havent trained it while adventuring? So could train weapon skil lto rank 2.

But cant train a skill learnt after character creation to rank 2 as I have bought rank 1. Eg after character creation, with my 1st xp i trained Ride to rank 1. If i am in same career at rank 2, i cannot train ride to rank 2, as I have already trained it.

But this only applies until I am on my second career?

I hope this question makes sense.

Doesn't matter if you trained it at creation or used an XP from Rank 1 during your adventures, you can train it up to Rank 2. You can only train each skill once per Rank though, so you could not go from Rank 0 to Rank 2 in a single character Rank.

You may train the same skill in the same career providing you don't do it in the same character Rank. You could train Weapon Skill at 19XP and then again at 21XP in the same career because they are different character Ranks whether you are in the same or different careers. The same skill could be trained at 9XP and 10XP, because they are different character Ranks.

The restriction on learning each skill only once per character Rank applies for the character's whole life, you can never train the same skill more than once per character Rank.

Okay, i understand now. its rank not career. Thats everything I need to know about characters training I think

Just a personal note: We do not let a player train a skill a second time before Rank 2 otherwise their success rate approaches 91%. That includes having it "trained" at character creation.

Unless I am misunderstanding you, you can't. Rank 2 is the first time you can put a second 'dot' in any skill, so I'm not sure what your houserule is doing other than saying the same as the official rules, can you explain it another way?

Correct, I was verifying your response :)

The confusion has arisen in some groups because of the Career Dedication bonus errata which states that you get a bonus specialization that you "trained" after creation. That led some people to think that they could start with one yellow die at creation and then "train" it during rank 1.
