Yet Another Squad Builder (with Wave 3 ships)

By geordan, in X-Wing

I think I forgot to post my builder here, and because there just aren't enough squad builders out there anyway…

http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/

I've added as much of the Wave 3 cards as I've been able to gather from various forums; let me know if I've made any glaring errors/omissions. Some of the unspoiled cards are educated guesses based on squinting at teaser images.

Bug reports and suggestions welcome!

WOW! This one is definitely my favorite. The interface is simple, clean and beautiful. The card browser is awesome. I love the different options for sorting. I also like that you can log in using something other than FB. If I were to add anything, I would add the pictures to the cards, but it looks fine without. This will be my go-to squad builder from now on. Great Job!

"Yet Another" shows too much disdain for yourself! This interface is very intuitive and appealing. The ability to look at all the cards and see which expansion they come in is helpful. My only complaint is that the plain text output should be a little more friendly to copy+pasting onto forums, etc. without using symbols. Nice work.

"Yet Anohter" has a long history in programming. I wouldn't assume it's distain.

Well I sort of assumed they take a popular application with many different versions and try to make the best version. I meant it a little tongue-in-cheek.

Wow! Nice programing man, this is already my favorite squad builder and works on my iphone! I would pay for this one if it were an i-app, very good contribution to the X-Wing community

I've added more revealed Wave 3 ships based on http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/991279/new-cards-up-for-lambda-and-hwk

Added alt attributes to the images; this should make copying and pasting add proper text when there are images (at least in Firefox; current Chrome does not yet support this, but supposedly Chrome Canary does; not yet tested in IE).

Thanks for the feedback! Ideas are always welcome.

Geordan, thanks for keeping this updated…. d (°_°) b

Geordan,

I love the improvements that you've continued to make to your builder and the feedback. It's by far the best one to use for mobile devices and I'm often not near a computer when I need to reference my builds!

If I may be so bold as to make a few suggestions:

  • A button to clear a squad (after I save one and I want to start working on another one)
  • A button to copy/duplicate a non-unique pilot
  • With the increase in expansions with waves 3-4, the dropdown box is becoming a little cumbersome. Maybe it's time to move to a pop-up box (or something)?

Keep up the GREAT work! (I'm jealous of your coding skills)

This is my favorite squad builder by far. My only quibble is the changes to the 'display as text' feature- the new implementation looks pretty, but I used to copy these into the notes on my phone, which was how I managed my squads. The newer, prettier version doesn't copy-paste well.

The clear squad button is next on the list (my wife has been asking for that).

I think I can do a copy button (not copying any uniques like Squad Leader or titles, of course).

Moving to a different method of displaying the ships is a pretty large change; a vast bulk of the code is baked around the functionality that the Select2 dropdown gives, so that's not likely to happen in the near future. It would require an almost complete rewrite, I think. (Although if someone were to make such a pull request on GitHub...)

I've gotten other requests like this too. I've been considering making a sort of Tournament Organizer view/print option, similar to the old version of View As Text, maybe more visually like the lists that FFG posts for sample squads for new Waves.

Thanks for using the builder and for all the feedback!

I like it

Geo's is the best and has been the best since the old one I cant remember went down to its unuseable state it is in.

One thing you might have missed is the Hawk picture when you pick a ship, every ship shows a picture. There may just not be one I dont know.

Oh and it works awesome on iphone and galaxy s models.

New features:

  • New Squad button - clears out the pilots and starts anew
  • Clone Pilot button - creates a copy of the pilot with any non-unique upgrades (does not create a Clone Wars pilot)

Let me know if there are any bugs. I've probably added some.

Oh, I haven't missed it -- I just haven't found a good picture. I might just take a macro photo of mine and be done with it...

Awesome additions!

Works like a dream so far!! Thanks for the new features!!

Youre maing it better and better everytime.

This is the only Squad Builder I use. That being said, I wish that there was some way of making a really simple plain-text display. I always paste my squads into Evernote when I'm done making them because then I can easily look at them on my phone and tablet.

Certainly my go to. Good job!

I really like this, but I'd request that you put some sort of indicator as to which expansion the card came from. IE: If I'm limited to wave 2, I don't want to accidentally build a wave 3 card upgrade into my squad. Great work though.

Like the poster above stated, maybe add a feature where the user can add in which expansions they have and how many, so that the user doesn't accidently make a squad with two R2 units when they only have 1 y-wing expansion, for example.

I'll be working on bringing back the simple text view as an option next.

You can see which expansions a card comes from in the Card Browser, but I'll add that in the card info in the main builder as well.

Adding the ability to store what expansions you have and limiting what you can select from it is a pretty big change. Would it be sufficient if it displayed what expansions you would need to build a given squad? (Although that can get pretty complicated too, since more than one expansion could possibly contribute a given card.)

I think simply showing which expansions provide each card/feature is adequate. I was brainstorming how this could be displayed in the main tool, but it's tough with how it's set up.

I suppose you could use a 2 letter code for each expansion next to the card title/pilot name.

Push The Limit (AW; IA)

AW = A-Wing Expansion

IA = Imperial Aces

In the squad building section, even a small identifier on the upgrade card would be sufficient. Then you'd know if you could add the upgrade

  • The simple text-based view returns for your cutting and pasting convenience! Click the "Simple View" button in the View as Text dialog to switch modes. Printing is still fancy, though.
  • Expansions providing each card are now listed in the info panel in the main builder (similar to how they are shown in the Card Browser). Card counts to come later.

Let me know if there are any bugs.
