2015…will this game be around?

By [email protected], in X-Wing

With the coming movie in 2015…

…will this game be around long enough to include any of the NEW vehicles and ships included in the new movie?!

I'm sure it will survive for a few more years yet.

Again agreed with 721. With Disney money behind the Star Wars name they will gladly let FFG keep making this game. Also with FFG's ability to make amazing games I can see this game lasting for years.

I doubt FFR will be running out of models to make for each faction and if the 2015 movie adds any in I'm sure they'll be part of the game in a heartbeat!

My concern is whether or not FFG's distribution and stocking issues might be a strike against them when it comes time to renew the license.

It will only be a strike against them if they don't correct it. They along with everyone didn't think the game would explode like it did. FFG is ramping up production and releasing reissues of Wave 1 and 2. Wave 3 will probably have a launch amount double that of what Wave 2 had. They are getting their prduction to demand ratio in line. I am not worried about them losing the license.

I would say yes. Considering they recently announced a battlestar galactica expansion out of nowhere after years of being dormant, this game will continue easily. They have just broken the movie only ships idea with the HWK-290, so there are plenty of comic, game and novel ships to use from the civil war period.

Also the sometimes agonisingly long gaps between ships mean you only get 1 or 2 expansions a year anyway so 2015 shouldn't be a problem. The biggest hurdle FFG will have with the new movie ships is licensing them since the license they have now may not cover the new films unless they have arranged a new deal with Disney.

Do you have alink for this? I haven't seen anything.

Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.

Premonitions, premonitions. These visions you have…

Careful you must be when sensing the future. The fear of loss is a path to the dark side.

Train yourself to let go… of everything you fear to lose.

Of course not. Sometime in the next 12 months the decision will be made to pull the plug on a game so outrageously successful that they haven't been able to keep it in stock throughout the first two releases. That decision will be driven by the fear that this stupidly successful game will suddenly die right when a major movie franchise launches that will rekindle interest not only in the universe but in the era the game is tied to.

If it weren't for the fact that the world is going to end sometime in the next 18 months due to a confluence of magical ley lines and the resurgence of ancient Mayan magic this game might have gone on for as many as 24 months, maybe even (gasp) 30 months…

To be clear, he's talking about an expansion to the Battlestar Galactica boardgame, not a BSG expansion for X-Wing. But here's the link:

Dang, I would have loved a BSG version of these game mechanics. Hey, FFG, you paying attention? They could do old and new versions too. Just leave Loren Green out though, LOL.

I can tell from the replies that the people posting here are most likely brand new to the world of Star Wars table top gaming, so let me answer the question from an experienced perspective.

The short answer to the question "2015… will this game be around?" is, "Yes."

The somewhat longer answer is, "Most likely, as long as LFL/Disney and FFG want to continue their partnership and their licensing agreement."

The lengthy and complicated answer is, "Absolutely. Despite producing a rich man's miniature game, FFG has provided the opportunity in a tabletop gaming partnership that LFL has been sorely in need of ever since it parted ways with Decipher."

Someone above commented that the production issues and lack of product could be a challenge, but that's unlikely. When Wizards of the Coast had the license, they produced a character-based miniature game for roughly five years and frequently sold out of product, especially with the first few sets. It was the best-selling game on the market at the time, despite a sourpuss attitude toward it on the part of the company commanders (I know this for a fact as I routinely discussed Star Wars Minis with them every chance I got). Only the marketing directors and the designer ever showed any interest in the game or its customers, and the few times the company pretended to support it, it was really just used as an excuse to skew the opinion of the bean counters against it. The game attracted more players at national events in its first year than this one has, and yet WotC called those events failures while FFG labels them successes.

So I'd say as long as they keep that upbeat attitude about what is definitely a solid game system and maintain the correct pricing required to cover the ever-increasing cost of plastic produced figures, the game should be around for quite some time.

So do I

:o:blink::rolleyes:

Considering they just announced 2 new games that are very much intended to have tons of expansions, including one that they worked out an agreement to get around the board game license they don't have, things point to their relationship with LFL being very positive at the moment.

The only thing that might be an issue is if Disney, because of the expected surge in popularity from new movies, ups the price of the license to beyond FFGs ability to pay it.

Disney has done stuff like that before.

They haven't mined the prequel or Clone Wars era, there's more from the EU left, plus there's whatever can come from the new movies, so there's certainly mot a lack of material to go forward on.

For that matter, there's still some options from the original Trilogy I'd like to see:

1. T-16 Skyhopper, T-47 Air/Snowspeeder, and Bespin Cloud Car. Maybe these aren't starships, technically, but they still might be fun, and lead to a logical expansion ...

3. Ground assault. Integrate the fighter mechanics with combat in-atmosphere with ground units, so we can have AT-ATs, AT-STs, ground troops, etc. Since the base game doesn't play altitude anyway I don't see why this couldn't work. I'd like to do a Hoth scenario.

YES

Not only do I think this game will last past 2015 but I believe we'll see the Raider class ship FFG just announced in Episode 7. The ship was designed by FFG and LucasFilms for the game and I believe will be the first of many tie-ins to the new film.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.. would be cool though

I think it more likely that it will turn up in Rebels where it can more easily have screen time.

I would expect it in rebels way more than EP vii, given that the raider was a new ship 1 year before that show begins instead of 40+ years before EP vii.
