Flying Power Bomb and the timing of X

By Steel5, in UFS Rules Q & A

Flying Power Bomb says E: If this attack is blocked, your opponent discards X cards from the top of their deck. X equals this attack's damage.

My question is, when is X determined?

If I play it out and then enhance with the card first, toss on some damage pumps (let's say +6 or so) and then let it go, would my opponent discard two? Eight? Four if they blocked? What if they enhanced with The Curse of Immortality and then blocked, do they discard 1?

the number is determined when it is blocked.

Number is determined when the ability resolves, after the block step when the block takes effect. Blocking doesn't reduce damage, so whatever damage the attack has when blocked is how much they mill.

Hey Tag,

I'm sorry to nit pick, but you appear to contradict yourself here. If I understand the rules correctly the first statement is correct. When this ability resolves, the ability checks the damage. If it is 5, then they will mill 5. If they then reduce the damage of the attack using for instance Amy's Assistance, that will not reduce the amount they discard unless it reduces it to a level where it doesn't actually deal damage. I may be wrong about this, but that it's what I interpret from the rules.

not exactly, Rick.

because of the "IF" statement, nothing happens with the ability until it triggers - in this case, the moment is it blocked. at THAT time the damage is checked, and cards will be discarded.

Part of the confusion is there are actually two abilities here. The enhance itself, and the continuous ability it creates.

no, there isnt, there is 1 ability and it creates a floating effect. when the trigger for the floating effect goes off then the ability resolves, which includes defining X
