Expansions

By baileyborough, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

This might sound really stupid, but how do the expansions fit into the core set?

What I mean by this is, if I am partway through the campaign, is there value in getting these? I can't get my head around how and when they come into use. Are there more campaigns to do? Relayability? I live the look of them but just need to get a better understanding.

cheers,

C.

Expansions for Descent 2E seem be split into two types: big box and small box.

Small box expansions usually have two heroes and two monsters, plus a new LT and a small set of "rumour quests" designed to fit in to a larger campaign. At least, this is what the currently released Lair of the Wyrm small box has. We don't know much about the recently announced Troll Fens yet, but base don the one article it looks like it has two heroes and two monsters, plus an LT. =P

It also looks to be the much anticipated "Green/Blue" expansion to match LoW's "Red/Gold." (Based on the colours of the hero archetypes included.)

Big box expansions would seem to have 4 new heroes (one of each archetype), a larger number of monsters and a new "full length" campaign. The two "Big Boxes" we currently have are the core set and the upcoming Labyrinth of Ruin.

I would imagine that Lair of the Wyrm's rumour quests could easily be mixed into wither The Shadow Rune of the Labyrinth of Ruin campaigns. assuming Troll Fens has its own rumour quests (they haven't actually said tha tyet, but it seems likely) then they could also be combined into either full length campaign.

Whether or not it is viable to include two or more sets of rumour quests in a single campaign is a question that Troll Fens will hopefully address. Personally I'm leaning towards it NOT being feasible, since too many quests would top out the heroes' character progression very early in the campaign.

I really think I like the alternating expansion sizes. It's going to be interesting to see what all happens, but with the campaigns being different, the side quests or rumor quests being different, and it all tying in together, it's going to be pretty awesome.

The side quests sure can be helpful for getting money for the Heroes, but the extra bonuses for the OL are just as awesome.
