Help with a squad

By Bjorn Rockfist, in X-Wing

I am needing to build a 70 point squad for a league session coming up. Either faction is fine with me. I have tested this, which happens to be just 1 ship, and it has won 100% of the test games so far. I am just leery of 1 ship.

Boba Fett - Cluster Missles - HLC - Seismic Charges - Veteran Instincts - Gunner - Slave-1 - Engine Upgrade - Proton Torpedoes

Total of 66 points

I have all the ships listed in my signature.

Do leagues usually only run 70 pts, or is it just this league?

Our group is running a summer building league. We started at 35, then going to 70, and then 100. With the limited supply of product and helping to learn rules we are doing it like we have done our WFB and WH40K leagues.

Well, I've nevered really played much besides 100 pts, but if I were told to build to 70, I think these would be my top choices:

Imperial:

Fel - PTL, Stealth Device (33)

Phennir - PTL, Stealth (31)

Admittedly, this is probably not best, especially since you couldn't even fill out all the points if you tried. But I think it would be really fun.

Trelix - HLC

Fel

Not much in the way of upgrades, but there's not a wasted point anywhere. I think this might well be pretty sick.

Phennir (or Fel…but he's already gotten enough facetime, no?) - PTL, Stealth

3x scrubs

Not many other squads will have the ability to throw ships to the wolves, and Phennir/Fel has a good shot to stay alive despite being the clear target.

Rebel:

4x Prototype Pilots (just cuz)

2x Green Pilot - PTL

Green Pilot - PTL and Concussion Missiles, or Gold Pilot - Ion Turret and the droid that disposes of damage, or Garven

Chewbacca - Luke Copilot, Falcon Title

Green Pilot (or drop Luke to a Gunner and take a Rookie)

Or for lolz 3x Gold Pilot with Ion Turret

Good luck with the league!

big ships would be hard to take down in a 70pt format.

1) 2x bounty hunter with seizmic charges would be tough.

2) Han Solo/swarm tactics + rookie pilot

3) Luke/shield upgrade/draw their fire/r2d2 + Wedge/shield upgrade

Awesome ideas guys! I will try some out this weekend in some test games. I agree the big ships have been beasts in the test games I have already played. I love running Fel and/or Turr with PTL and Stealth….but that 1 lucky roll and BOOM!

I used Horton - R2-D2 - ICT for my 35 point list and went 5-0. Also speaking of lucky rolls….I played against 2 TIEs with Stealth and stripped both with range 3 primary weapon fire. 2 attack dice vs. 5 agility dice…was something I will never see again lol.

The thing with Horton is, while he doesn't have a lot of firepower he just doesn't miss. This last Tuesday I tried a variation of Han Shoots first with Lando and a fully loaded Horton. I planned to use Lando's extra action to let Horton shoot accurately, but I quickly found that it was wasted. All by himself, whether using Protons, Mains, or Ion Turret, Horton is able to focus and pretty consistently hit with every die he rolls (Or Target Lock and hit with his torps). What I wound up with was Lando usually gave Horton a free boost for his engine upgrade.

So, 2 hits vs. 5 agility is not good odds, but he has to get his 2 evades pretty much every time. If he missed an action because of collision or he doesn't have a focus/evade handy for some other reason, he has a 38% chance of rolling less than 2 evades on 5 dice. This means he has better than 1/3 chance of being hit and losing that Stealth device. Your odds of hitting him drop from 38% to 7% if he has a focus.

Just something to think about.

I take range 3 shots with Y-Wings/TIEs consistently when my opponent misses an action. It is especially effective vs. a stealthy Soontir Fel if he runs over an asteroid or runs into someone and leaves himself without the 2 focus/evade he runs with most of the time. Getting a single hit in to pop that Stealth really helps to take him down later in the game when you don't have as much firepower available.

My opponent didn't miss an action either time. He had Evade both times….he just rolled 4 blanks and an eye lol.

Well I have narrowed it down to the following 4…

#1 Howlrunner+Swarm Tactics+Stealth Device (23)

Black Squadron Pilot+Swarm Tactics (16)

Black Squadron Pilot+Swarm Tactics (16)

Black Squadron Pilot (14)

#2 Bounty Hunter+Mercenary Copilot (35)

Bounty Hunter+Mercenary Copilot (35)

#3 Gold Squadron Pilot+Ion Cannon Turret (23)

Gold Squadron Pilot+Ion Cannon Turret (23)

Gold Squadron Pilot+Ion Cannon Turret (23)

#4 Han Solo+Swarm Tactics (48)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Leaning more towards the TIE swarm, but man those 2 Bounty Hunters look sweet. The 2 Rebel lists are solid as well. I know for a fact I'll be dealing with at least 1 Kath+Marksmanship+Ion Cannon list….which I had one made with Howlrunner. Just…don't…know!

How about this if you wanna go Rebels?

2 Rookies

Dutch w/ Ion Cannon Turret

Comes out to 70 points exactly.

#1 Howlrunner+Swarm Tactics (20)

Backstabber (16)

Dark Curse (16)

Mauler Mithel + Veteren Instincts (18)

you fire at 9/8/8/6 pilot skill with howlrunner and wingman or 9/6/6 without howlrunner :)

I'd be able to fire at 9/9/9 and get to reroll an attack die each.

And wouldn't my

All attack at PS 8 per the FAQ…..or did I read that wrong?

Nope, you read that right. You can chain the Swarm Tactics to get everyone shooting at PS8…..start with Howl, giving PS8 via Swarm to one of the Black Squad with Swarm, who then passes it to the other Black Squad with Swarm, who then passes it to the last Black Squad.

almost. with this setup u go at 9/9/8 with all non-howlrunner ships (vader + academy) getting a reroll each. thats still decent firepower.

How would it not be 9/9/9? I don't get how it would be 9/9/8….Vader uses swarm on Howlrunner to bump her to 9….she then uses swarm on the academy to make him 9. I am confused how I can pull straight 8s with Howl and 3 black squadron pilots….but not straight 9s with this setup as you say.
