Staying at a lower rank when player could move on to the next.

By TravellingStroyteller, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Is a player required to move on once they have gotten the required experiance to go up in rank or could they choice to stay with the rank they are on and continue to buy talents and skills? This question is especially important when it come to alternate ranks that give players options for the character they will not have once they move on.

Take for example the Genetor, what if a players wants to build up their Tech-Priest to get all the skills amd talents they would not have access to (especially at such early levels, or at all) once they move on to the next rank.

A character goes up rank once they have spent a certain amount of xp. (Core book, p38). So the player has the option not to spend the xp.

However, you can always go back to earlier ranks and purchase advances from those. So there's no need to hold back unless you're saving for specific costly advances.

You always have the option of buying anything from any rank you've been on previously at the listed price. Ranking up does not prevent you from buying lower-ranked skills or talents.

Well that is helpful to know, I will make sure to keep that in mind. Thank you

Ok, here's a followup question to the OP's...

At character creation, a character is considered to have spent 4,500 xp on his starting skills, abilities, talents, gear, etc... He (or she :P ) still has 500 to spend as part of the character creation process.

So...

Because it is not spent yet, that character is not actually Rank 1 yet. I assumed this was some sort of small screw up overlooked by the writers... so I just let my players spend the 500 on the Rank 1 Table anyway. Was this correct? I believe I read that the 4,500 is assumed to have been spent on the Rank 1 Table.

Also, if a player doesn't spend all of that 500 xp, does it carry over into game to be spent later?

The only reason so much starting XP is talked about is because of the jump in power-level from a starting DH character to a starting RT character. They repeated this mistake with DW, BC and OW.

So rather than a starting character in a 40k RP starting at 0xp (like most systems) they all start at varying amounts of XP. In essence though you can ignore that starting XP beyond the 500 you can choose how to spend and treat it as a way of reaching rank 2 quicker.

Not to mention that the DH1 character really was several times more competent at 5k exp than any char from the later lines is at start, not to mention an Ascended DH char compared to a noobie DW one. Guess part of that problem was that DH was written by a different company than the later lines, or at least could be.

In my group we generally play with 1k starting xp, ie 4k+1k to spend, and the Age xp from some unofficial DH supplement.
