Warrior weapons?

By RonFarster, in Only War Rules Questions

I'm honestly at a loss here; why would anyone EVER take warrior weapons? it costs 3 regimental points to downgrade equipment? if you want to give yourself a melee weapon to play that kinda fluff then why not purchase a melee weapon for like 5 equipment points?

and why is it 3 points? Ive thought it over again and again and cannot see why fantasy flight ever put this in?

It's more than fluff, in my opinion. The regiment ARE full of primitives that have not or can not grasp modern weapons. And as for the 3 point cost, I see it as the ability to re-equipm them from the Departmento Munitorum with the weapons they are a customed to or even the raw materials for the Regiment to re-make and re-arm with.

We went with this while creating a Regiment from a home world for a homebrew game we play from another system. The planet is barely iron age tech for the most part. We equipped them with Warrior Weapons and got an upgrade as we also took the Hardened Fighteers training. Feral World was the base. In the end they start with a Bow, a Mono-edged Spear, a Laspistol, Flak vest and Helmet, and leathers/hide on the arms and legs. With the stat bumps and Talents they get for the other things we bought they're actually pretty effective. It's mostly an homage to the oiginal game and system we took them from, but if and when I run my Only War game, they'll probably take this as their regiment, Here they are:

The 1 st Muvian Bone Warriors

· Homeworld: Feral (Mu)

· Commanding Officer: Choleric (Keladesh)

· Regiment Type: Light Infantry

· Doctrines: Hardened Fighters, Warrior Weapons

Darck Child - I don't understand your second sentence; why does it cost so much?

and to Qcipher: did you purchase that las-pistol with equipment points? i can't tell, because warrior weapons removes it from your equipment list and replaces it the primitive weapon.

my main qualm is why it costs 3 points really, i can't think of why it would be so expensive.

I believe at the end of the creation, it replaces a Basic weapon, but leaves the laspistol, and gives a melee weapon, which then can get upgraded to good quality with the Mono trait. So we changed the Basic lasgun with a Bow and got the spear and still had the las pistol.

If you re-read Warrior Weapons, you'll see that you actually keep the laspistol and the two charge packs. Basically, Warrior Weapons replaces the main weapon of a standard kit - the Laspistol - with a Common Low-Tech melee weapon AND a Laspistol. But the real reason I think it costs 3pts is the fact that it adds Parry to your skills. For most specialties, Parry is expensive to acquire. Further, if you compare Warrior Weapons to the other Special Equipment Doctrines, particularly those from Hammer of the Emperor, I think you'll find that the cost is not that terribly high.

Parry is not really that expensive objectively; half the classes have an aptitude which makes it cost 200 and 300 isnt really that bad for no aptitudes. some clases have both aptitiudes.

Also, although its not that expensive compared to other special equipment doctrines its MUCH worse.

Thanks for pointing out the rule about the las pistols, that makes things cheaper for my regiment!

I guess I did exaggerate the cost of Parry, but to be slightly fair, I love to build skill monkey characters, and if I can save a few XP on a very useful skill like Parry, I would totally do so.
