Pokemon & Dark Heresy? Is it possible?

By Mystrunner, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hello all, first time posting anything original of my own. So here's the deal, before people start getting bored.

I'm running a game of Dark Heresy, group of friends, some seasoned roleplayers, others not so much, some new to 40K, others who've loved it for a while. Now, we've just started, and as I'd been reading over the fluff and some of the novels, something occured to me; with infinite worlds, it's very plausible that the acolytes of a campaign could run into anything , up to and including materials from other books, games (roleplaying and otherwise) and movies. Not only that, most of them would involve Heresy of some sort, so a decent plot could develop. I brought this up, and it was agreed that the 40K universe could indeed be very flexible.

Which led me to another though... what sort of things could be plausible in 40K, but still be either seriously enjoyable, or ridiculously enjoyable? I thought about dropping the Acolytes into the setting of the old RPG Deadlands, fighting the forces of Chaos there (The Reckoners), or perhaps into 7th Sea, to work with the Castillian Inquisition for once. Many laughs were had at the thought of Inquisitors in odd places, purging "evil".

And thus, the thought was born. Every other "episode" of game, we would have a cross-setting episode. Quicker than the others, less formal, still giving XP but if things went awry, it could always turn out to be a bad dream sequence or something. And the initial thought was thus:

How would the Inquisition react to Pokemon?

Now think about it. We're talking about /very/ sentient creatures, who casually violate the laws of physics like you any I walk down the street. A world where the Emperor isn't venerated at all, and life revolves around these obviously warp-tainted entities. Worse yet, some of them are most likely daemonic in origin... these people are consorting with the Enemy in the worst manner! So, a few of us agreed that we'd keep this plot idea between ourselves, and see how people reacted once they learned where the GM'd taken them.

So, here I am, developing the stats for some 50 Pokemon, and working on a plot to tie it all together for a one-shot. The idea seems very simple; during a warp-jump, a powerful warp-entity attacks the acolytes' ship, wounding the ship and forcing them into realspace, next to a small green world. They look to escape, only to find a warp-storm surrounding them and the planet. Their astropath/psycher player reports that he can definitely detect the source of the storm... it's coming from the world below. Thus the Acolytes set down, and set out to purge whatever vile phenomenon is causing their imprisonment. The world of pokemon takes a bit of an American McGee twist, having MewTwo causing the storm, ruling over the world as a mad God-King, his chief priests the Final Four, simpering madmen his followers... on a world inhabited by savage and strange beasts.

My question for you all is manyfold:

A. Is this a terrible suggestion or what? The players know this session is going to be a "hot springs episode", meaning it'll be more silly and non-canon to the overall plot.

B. Do you have any suggestions for the campaign? Pokemon that should make an apperance, how to set the scene, the atmosphere or whatnot?

C. Do you have any suggestions for stats? That's seeming to be the roughest part, is coming up with a way to render pokemon as creatures that actually eat meat to live, but aren't going to butcher the party whole.

The Puritan Acolyte said: This blasted world is filled with xenophilic heretics. But even there xeno "freinds" cant save them from rightous bolter fire.

The Radiacal Acolyte said: Its amazzing how the local populance exploit these controlable xenos.

So when then return they decide if either exterminatus or emissaries are to arrive next at the planet?

Hmm... that would make an interesting scene. The Acolytes need to write up a report of their experiences. The trouble is deciding if the planet is truly "gone" in regards to the xenos living there, or if there are a few holdouts, perhaps elderly people who don't like those **** kids blowing up their **** poke-mans on the **** lawn.

It really depends on whether the setting is as grim and dark as 40K is, or if it's true to the abysmal show, and everything is made of sunshine and jellybeans... would Team Rocket be allies? Hmm....

Blah, I hate Team Rocket -.- They can be incinerated. Slowly, feet first > :)

But Pikachu must survive. Because he's the Emperor Incarnate. But sooo mnuch cooler!

Throw'em into a Hive and let the fun blossom like a mushroom cloud. happy.gif

No, no, no, no

You see the only upside of this whole crossover concept is the opportunity to kill that little yellow freak once and for all. Pull the damned thing from its fluffy safe show where it has the shield of being the protagonist, and kill it in the destructive and gore drenched lunacy that is the DH critical tables.

If necessary, burn down the Imperium, blow up Holy Terra and give the universe over to the necrons (or just blast it all to random atoms, whatever)

Anything to never, EVER have to hear the phrase "pika, pika" again.

You'll be better and stronger for it.

Sorry to step on your nostalgia, but my vicious unreasoning (yet entirely rational) hatred for Pikachu just couldn't allow your dreams to live.

Besides this if 40k, hate...no excuse me... HATE is a virtue.

I think an encounter with a burrowing Onix would be worth doing.

Certainly freak the acolytes right out if done properly...and it'd have to be hard to kill with conventional weapons.

Should also have a few holdouts of sanity... but make them using non obvious pokemon like ghost / dark types... and all the cute ones be the truly sick/evil critters.

And it sucks.

You might want to check out Pokethulu - Gotta Catch YOU all! and exellent little RPG

Here Pokemon, meet deamonic energies...

...Idless

don't do it as an exact crossover rather a much more darker grittier version that uses inspiration from the show. make the creatures really monstrous and viscious little beasts. you could the creature 'balls' as a radical form of Xenos containment cube. here's some suggestions for other games:

> 7th sea: could work as a backwater feudal world. change the magic to psychic powers and away you go.

> Deadlands: could work best as the Hell on Earth or Lost Colony version. change the reckoners to chaos and have the creatures as demonic monsters.

> Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay: yeah i know it sounds crazy but it could work as a feudal world. have halflings, ogres and dwarfs as abhumans change magic to psychic powers (though the locals will think its magic)

Hope this helps. and yes Pokemon is abysmal and needs a serious case of exterminatus and purging. burn, pikachu, burn demonio.gif

Just out of interest, what 50 Pokemon were you planning on using? I hope none of the Densetsu are in there, like Lugia or Mewtwo. You'd need to be using the lower down Pokemon. Possible stuff like Geodude, but even a Charizard has fire hot enough to melt boulders.

Well, it really depended on where the players went. I knew things like Magneton and Scyther were going to show up, but wasn't sure about most... so I just threw together basic stats for the ones my (uninvolved) friends said were the most memorable, put 'em on flash cards, and was going to keep them close at hand. As for MewTwo, he's the main villain of the session; powerful, but within the players' ability to kill. :D
