The TIE Advanced…is it worth it?

By Captain_Arrr, in X-Wing

I don't see the TIE Advanced in a ton of lists, so is it worth it to bring it? it's an expensive TIE but it has the ability to use missiles. If it is worth it, do you go high quality and bring Vader, or cheap it up?

Popular consensus seems to be that the x1 isn't worth it for the generics, without Vader. In fact I prosed a question a while ago to the forum to come up with viable lists using TIE Advanceds. Go take a look there for some ideas and feedback on the TIE Ax1, especially from Ravncat.

I have one TIE Adv and have used it a couple of times as Vader, in which it has been completely worth it.

Vader's two actions a turn is amazing, then throw on Stealth and Homing Missiles, and now he is to be truly feared.

I wouldn't invest in any more TIE Adv though.

heres a build im currently testing/playing…

Vader + engine upgrade + assault missiles + squad leader (40)

Maarek + engine upgrade + push the limit + homing missiles (39)

Howlrunner + push the limit (21)

Maarek operates like a mini-vader in this team with PTL.

i was using Turr in place of howlrunner and didnt have engine upgrade on maarek. that worked pretty well but i wanna try the above version next time i play. The plan here is to use howrunners extra action for doubling up on focus and evade for added defense.

everyone in this squad gets up to two actions every turn (as long as they can shred stress with a green manouvre)… having a tie advanced that can taregt lock and focus in the same turn is nice. having the ability to boost and evade/focus is handy as well.

i find with the tie-advanced you have to go all in and upgrade it hard to make it worth it.

Missiles + Shields + Vader = worth it

One list I kind of want to try centered around advances is:

Pilot: Darth Vader
Tie Advanced x1 (29)
Upgrades:

  • Squad Leader (2)

Pilot: Maarek Stele
Tie Advanced (27)
Upgrades:

  • Marksmanship (3)
  • Cluster Missiles (4)
  • Stealth (3)

Pilot: Soontir Fel
Tie Interceptor (27)
Upgrades:

  • Elusiveness (2)
  • Stealth (3)

The main idea here is that Soontir strips off shields and Vader gives Maarek the actions he needs to target lock and marksmanship frequently to act in a crippling capacity. If by some chance I can pull off a focus and marksmanship against a target locked foe the cluster missiles would prove extremely effective with Maarek's pilot ability. Hard to pull off but might be worth it. Vader is mostly there in a support capacity with the other two being the main hitters which is why he didn't get stealth. Haven't tested it yet though and my opponent pool is so small it would probably mean nothing if it worked with them anyway.

Edit: On second thought. Probably want to downgrade Soontir since it makes squad leader kind of a waste with two skill 9s. Would free up some extra points there. Hmmm…

iv had good success with PTL on Maarek. it lets you go defensive (focus + evade) when u really need to or go offensive (focus + target lock) in the same turn. the stress isnt that hard to shed either.

I just feel that it's a waste to take Maarek if you aren't going to maximize his odds of getting to use his pilot ability. Personal preference though.

I have 4 TIE advanced, I rarely use Vader or Marak. I tend to use them with the unnamed pilots along with missiles.

I use Maarek or Vader exclusively, i have never even thought about standard Tie Advanced since A-Wings are out. They do the same stuff, just better and cheaper. If i absolutely need an imperial missile ship i try to spare the points for Vader or Maarek somewhere.
