Anyone tried stripping and repainting their ships? If so, what did you use to strip them?
Repainting models
I dont know if stripping them is necessary. As a modeller, the paint looks thin enough that you could prime them, or just paint over them without serious issue. If you're set on attempting to strip them, I would recommend something not harmful to plastic, like Simple Green. You'd need to soak them for a few days to see if it works. Personally, I wouldnt risk it. It could make the plastic soft and warp the miniature.
*I keep saying plastic, but I'm pretty sure the X-Wing mins are made of resin. Simple Green should still work, but DO NOT rinse or place the minis in hot water. That will soften them considerably.
If it helps, these are definitely not resin. I've had the box in my car trunk (black car, and I live in central FL), and I've seen no sign of any heat damage even after a couple of days. I do agree, you should be able to prime over them.
Well simple green did'nt strip the paint off completly. It did however get rid of the shiny sheen from the inks they used and cleared up a few of the blotchy areas. Black portions of the paint on the tie fighter wings never loosened.
I did re-prime the ship and the detail is still real good. I'll post pics of the re-paint this weekend when it's finished.
P.S. Your model will still smell like simple green even after you rinse and re-prime it. FYI.![]()
Thanks.
I got a second Firespray (mainly to use the base for a Revell Sith Infiltrator), and repainted it straight up; no stripping. Masked the canopy (and the aft section, which was fine) with Magic Tape, sprayed it with Testors Light Aircraft Grey, brush-painted panels in various places & colors to give a sorta "Millenium Falcon" look, washed it in black, and hit the whole thing in Semigloss. Turned out just fine. GREAT for a "scrub bounty-hunter."
Brake fluid works great for stripping models too. I've had parts soaking for over a year with absolutely no damage to the plastic. (Not that the paint needed to soak that long, I just forgot about them).
