Khal Drogo DON + Aegons Blade + Blood of the Dragon

By Tyveil2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Got these in my starting hand last night.

Khal Drogo DON: http://www.cardgamedb.com/index.php/GoTCards.html/_/defenders-of-the-north/wolves-of-the-north/khal-drogo-wotn

Blood of the Dragon: http://www.cardgamedb.com/index.php/GoTCards.html/_/core-set/Blood-of-the-Dragon-Core

Aegon's Blade: http://www.cardgamedb.com/index.php/GoTCards.html/_/core-set/Aegons-Blade-Core

Setup: Played Drogo

Phase 1: BoD + Aegons Blade.

In Turn 1 I already had a character that attacked (military or power) for 11 STR. I would do a power attack each turn, gain at least 2 power (1 for renown) and kill off a character with <5 str. If we counted BoD I would be able to kill anything <11 str. We assumed that couldn't be right and used the BoD +6 only for STR used to calculate the challenge winner since the card says during challenges.

Still this seems like a really deadly and unstoppable combo. It wasn't a game at all, and usually our matches are pretty even. Am I missing something here? Did I play this wrong? Are there ways to counter this?

Drogo's Response triggers in Step 5 of the Challenge Resolution Framework Action Window. The challenge doesn't end until Step 6 of that FAW. Therefore, he is still in a POW challenge in your scenario, his STR is still 11, and he can indeed kill a character up to STR 10.

Kneel, direct kill, attachment hate, icon stripping, etc. are all counters to it. Further, it's a 3-card combo (that can be countered by kneel, direct kill, attachment hate, icon stripping, etc.) and there are two other Khal Drogo's in the cardpool competing for deckslots.

But other str 11 cards cost 7 (in one turn) - Army of the North? And have no special abilities.

This combo costs 8 total, cost can be split across multiple turns, and has Renown, Dragon, Lord, and the ability to kill off characters during power attacks. Wow. I'm keeping these in my deck. Just seemed curious since a lot of people seem to say blood of the dragon is not worth it due to cost. I guess maybe if there are common 1 cost attachment removals. I have 1 core and all of the DoN series.

This is a powerful combo without Aegons blade. Just Drogo + Blood of Dragons. Turn one STR 9 with Renown that will kill anything STR 8 or below.

What determines if it is summer or winter? I've seen cards that are based on the season, but nothing that says what season it is.

You really should have started a new thread with this question - this has nothing to do with Khal Drogo.

That being said, there are cards that say "It is Summer" or "It is Winter". If a card like that is in play, it is Summer or Winter. If no such card is in play, then it is not.

As with most attachments, this is probably a lot more viable now that the Tin Link is Restricted. No-one wanted to pay for Blood of the Dragon just to have it discarded the next time his opponent's Maester knelt to draw cards.

One thing to remember about Blood of the Dragon that's easy to miss until you've used it some is that the character doesn't become a Dragon until it's actually participating in challenge. So, absent some other card effect, QoD Dany's ' Dragons don't kneel to attack' ability doesn't apply to a character with Blood of the Dragon attached to it.

This is indeed a powerful combo. i guess you are just starting out so believe me when i say there will be loads if different type of combos that will also get you excited, however, one thing i have learnt whilst playing the game extensively over the last 12 months or so is the fact that EVERY combo / effect etc can be and often will be defeated which is what makes the game so compelling.

I myself play a mixture of Melee and Joust and rest assured everytime somebody activates a new fancy combo or brings something different to the arena then it becomes a target. As you become familiar with decks and opponents decks this will become more and more apparent.

I would suggest keep playing, enjoy the success you may achieve and building of new combos/decks BUT always be aware that is it becomes a success then it WILL become a target.

Such is the joys of A Game of Thrones !!
