WizKids coming pout with Star Trek ship combat game using X-wing rules

By Ken on Cape, in X-Wing

Oh man… I mean sure, I enjoyed playing Star Fleet battles years ago.

Look at icons on the cards, ship bases, ship cards and the basic packaging:
Red attack icon, Green defensive icon, Yellow hull icon and Blue shields. They have a list of actions shown, colored firing arch indicating faction. The Proton Torpedoes card is setup exactly like X-Wing, attack dice, Range and point value; they seem to have copied directly from FFG.

"FlightPath™ maneuver system"?
Bet this is just manuver templates.

I wonder if this is a deal WizKids made with FFG or are they working together? if not the fallout from this should be interesting. If they are working together, this sucks because I now have to collect a Star Trek game now too?

++++

Just noticed the small details on the poster:

Star Trek: Attack Wing is a stand alone game that is not compatible with other FFG FlightPath™ titles.

Then there is the copyright clause at the bottom…

Attack Wing is using capital ships, which I think detracts from the dogfighting feel of the game.

Also, their ships apper to be re-prints of the ships Wizkids uses in the other star trek games, so nothing will be to scale either.

Those two things aside, Start putting out Borg Cubes and i will be begging them to take my money.

What I do like about the game, Is that the Pilot of the ship has his own little chit that goes on the Base in place of X-Wing's Number chit. would be nice to have little markers to make it even easier to see which pilot if where.

The very fact it 'is' capital ships is why I still want it. I really need something quick and easy to resolve ship to ship combat for my campaign. And that would do it if they bring out enough of the factions and ships.

Yeah, this was annunced a couple months ago. Other than basic game system similarities, they are doing things differently in Attack Wing. Normal size games will be more 1 on 1, and every ship will have a crew. They are doing some unique things with rerouting your ships power and stuff like that, and it sounds like the main game will have exploration type objectives along with military.

Anyhow, it won't have the same respect for scale as X-Wing, and it won't be compatible. Though someone that was at the GAMA trade show said it would be pretty easy to houserule the games together if one wanted to.

It will have 3 factions out of the gate.

Seriously? Get a box. Paint it black. Once per turn, choose a ship to be completely destroyed.

Done.

Attack wing does look interesting but it's one of those things where I'd have to see a little more of it before buying into it. It's not like I can have a TMP-only simulation so…

I love me some Trek, but I'm not into buying two games that are so similar.

That said, if it really is just one ship per player, I could totally get into playing it on Vassal on the sly. ;)

SFB was always the best of detail and dedication!… maybe not this new wizkids thing. wonder if legal against ABD? Vielen Danke

AMAZING (and somehow hilarious) that the bases are virtually flippin' identical to X-Wing's. I'm like, "how can they even DO that?" It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Well, the scale won't be precise. However, if it's at least believably close (scowling at YOU, Wizards of the Coast!) it'd still be cool. We'll see if I elect to sink any money into it. Starter, probably, anyway.

actually should be four factions, Dominion, Romulan, Klingon, And Federation.

Wow, is this game available yet? Has anyone tried it if it has?

If the ships were, in scale, and painted nicely then I would be in for this. Maybe not play wise, but collection wise. If they are the same old clicky minis, no thanks. My son has a box full of those already.

It is turns out to be as close to x-wing as it looks, it would be interesting to have some Star Wars vs. Star Trek battles.

With JJ Abrams running the SW and ST movies now…

Call me an nerdy elitist jerk, but I really hope the rule are dissimilar enough that we never see the two in combat against each other.

we won't. Its been stated on boardgamegeek that they are incompatible with one another.

Not only that, but the ST game is a "macro" game featuring capital ships and the SW game is a "micro" game featuring fighters. So, while I don't agree with the Nerd Purity, no worries for you nonetheless.
