Need Advice on Painting The Banners

By Sevej, in Battlelore

Dear all painters,

I just started to paint my battlelore set (well started a month ago, I'm slow). I'm still weighing ways to paint my banners. My gut tells me to go with hand priming. Anyone has good solution?

Meanwhile, here's the WIP pics. It's the standard unit color = banner color. Modified the green infantry a bit by giving them 'boots' and invert the normal color convention to allows the bags on their back show. I will not attempt for individual coat of arms for each knights since I'm waaay to impatient.

My poor attempt to immitate battlelore.com color scheme. As you can see I'm not the tidy type...

Hey, that is a good job!

Well, I primed my whole banners black. The mast and the edges of the pennants and standads.
Then I brushed the mast brown with a 0-brush.

But than, after playing and playing, I came to the conclusion, that it would be better to paint the banners edges according to its color.
Red egdes on red flags, blue on blue and green on green. Because if there is not enough light in the room you are playĆng, it could be sometimes difficult to distinguish green and blue flags. They looking so similar.

Thanks, it means a lot.

Are you masking the banner somewhat when you prime it? Or did you brush prime?

I saw germ's work and I think I'm going to paint the border according to the banner's color.

I think banner color (for the flag itself) looks better and is quicker to distinguish in battle. I painted the poles in wooden color however (you can see my banners in the first couple of pictures at www.karl.frank.name/battlelore).

As for priming, I'd not prime at all for the flags. It would be pain to either cover the stickers or to paint around them twice (once for priming and once for painting). Not worth it IMHO.

If it's any help, I didn't even prime my banners. I used Citadel paints. A single coat of Bestial brown and bronzed flesh drybrush highlights for the pennant banners and Boltgun Metal with Chaos Black drybrush highlights for the standard banners. Then Blood Red, Enchanted Blue and Snot Green for the banner colors, along with Kommando Khaki for the standard banners halves.

Hmm having primed every single model since my start of painting days, the thought of painting the plastic direcly has never occured to me sorpresa.gif I think that's a good idea. I was about to hand prime all of them! Thanks for the advices!

If anyone got other tricks, don't hesitate to add.

Try it on one of your spare banners to see if you like the results. I primed all of the figures as well, but when it came to the banners, I didn't see the use of priming them. I didn't need to put a second coat either...

I like to have the flag color "painted" around the edge of the flags themselves, then use brown for the poles. I found it much quicker and just as effective to use colored Sharpie pens to "paint" the banners. It's also a lot less messy.

Well I've tried painting around the flags and it looks quite nice. At first I'm confused what 'grey' will I use for the standard banner, turned out I don't need to paint them at all.

Haven't done the poles yet. I'm entering the '72 blue swordsmen hell'...

Sevej, I'm no miniatures painter and have no advice, but must say your painting skills are remarkable.

The giant spider looks great! Red highlights on the legs and joints is a nice touch.
