Rouge Trader Miniatures

By inkblot351, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

I am searching for miniatures to go with the RPG game. Are there any available? If not will there be any available soon?

My group just uses the WH40k table top minis for characters and enemies. Beyond that you can just use any mini from most games. As long as it fits the map and looks how you want it to, use it.

I bought the Zombies!!!!!! game a long time ago, and it comes with 50 male zombies and 50 female zombies, and I normally use them for trash mobs. They're a great size and there's so many and it gives the players something to focus on.

I recently bought some board games (like Descent: Journey In the Dark, and Mansions of Madness) that have monster figurines and player figurines that are plastic and usually the right size. They're nice because each one is a different monster so you can have some variety, and some of the nastier ones are bigger so you can do some really large bosses or something.

Though you don't get to pick what miniatures you're using, I like using board game minis, because it's really cost effective. You're getting a complete new game and resources to play it and other games with. They're not the quality that actual table-top minis are, but they're definitely fine for the need.

I used Lego miniatures, augmented with some paper and/or cloth coats and capes.

Sure, I lacked some stuff, but it worked better that I first imagined. I suppose stickers could work as well.

I have a couple squads of orks and space marines from the tabletop that I started off with, since then all the players have been bringing their own eclectic collections of miniatures. The only signifigant things is compatability with a hex map, so I've declared everything that isn't some sort of hulking or enormous monster has to keep to a one inch base or less. Speaking of which the rulebook says the game is playable without a hex map, I kind of wonder how that would even work considering the focus on ranges and such in the combat rules.

Also it's called Rogue Trader not "Rouge Trader", considering how often the word rogue is used in geek circles I'm not sure why nobody can ever spell it.

I use a grid map, but to each his own. :P My players whine if we don't use minis, but most of our minis are fantasy… fortunately, given the tendancy for RT characters to still carry swords or wear robes or "chainmail" *cough xeno-mesh cough* or, you know, be Orks, a lot of them still look right. For others, well… if we had the money, I'm sure we'd be buying WH40K minis.

My GM was lazy a couple of times and we used the mini's but just used books and pencils for boundries and a tape measure for distances.

Infinity has some good models with a sci-fi aesthetic, but with hand-to-hand weapons. Honestly, a lot will depend on how your guys are outfitted. If you want fantasy looking people, easy. If you want Sci-fi looking people, easy. If you want people bearing a mix of influences, it becomes a lot more difficult.

Well I think the thing to keep in mind is you're never going to just find a mini that really fully encompasses your full conception of your character, if that's what you want and you don't have the gear and skillset to literally build your own from scratch you're pretty screwed. What I suggest is forget getting accross exactly what you think your character looks like and get a mini that generally gets accross what they DO. For instance if your guy is really melee centric find something with a really big eye drawing sword, if your guy is a sharpshooter get something that's holding a sniper rifle. The mini isn't there to roleplay for you, it's there to quickly get accross to other players in combat what your guy's function is in combat so that they can make more educated decsions in terms of tactics.

Hasslefree and Reaper Miniatures both do a HUGE selection of minis for sci-fi, fantasy, modern, and others. Sculpt quality varies from dubious to acceptable (Nothing as good as Infinity or Bushido) but prices are good and the scope is there.

Infinity (by Corvus Belli) are some of the best-sculpted minis in existence at the moment and is hands down my favourite wargame, but they have more of a bubblegum-cyberpunk anime feel which isn't always suitable for 40kRPGS. They can also look odd mixed with 40k minis as they have far more realistic proportions compared to the very cartoony style of GW's sculpts.

I run combat through description and hand waving, not a map in sight! I keep a rough track on how far away everyone is from each other on a spreadsheet, other than that it just comes down to common sense and keeping a good visual picture of what's happening in my head, the problem I found with tactical maps is the limited scope, my Hex map is 3ftx3ft but I frequently have combatants squaring off a ranges up to 100-200 metres. The WH40kRPG lines aren't as dependant on accurate movement or positioning as, say, D&D 4th or GURPS-with-the-tactical-options-on.

Having said this I still occaisionally use miniatures though, mainly for things like marching order or formations, sometimes when the party splits it can be a good representation of who's with who. When I ran Rogue Trader I mainly used Lego minifigs, plus a kroot model for the kroot. I'm running Deathwatch now which is easier as I can use some of my (many) Space Marines.
