Tycho with PTL

By Bjorn Rockfist, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I am just wanting to make sure I am using him right. His ability on his card does not only allow him to do regular actions with a stress on him, but also be able to preform the free action that PTL gives correct? I know he can continue to get stress using PTL, but as long as I don't do red maneuvers he can just keep collecting stress.

Correct on all counts.

I'm sorry to dig this old post out.

I've just recently started playig x-wing and after purchasing the A-Wing expansion pack i was thrilled about the thought of doing 2 actions per turn with Tycho and PTL. However after a second thought and considering the rulebook again, we were not sure if this is possible after all...

Tycho's pilot ability states that he can perform actions even while stressed. PTL allows him to perform a second FREE action per turn and then receive a stess token.

The rulebook tho forbids a pilot to take free actions when he is stressed, and Tycho's ability only allows him to do normal actions while stressed.

So we figured Tycho can perform 2 actions (with PTL) in one round and in subsequent rounds, while beeing stressed, he can only perform his normal action and can not perform the FREE action from PTL since he is stressed.

Or does his pilot ability also allow him to do FREE actions while he is stressed?

A pilot, upgrade or any other ability will supersede the rules if they contradict each other. So in Tycho's case, his ability to preform actions when stressed, allows him to do so even though the rules say otherwise.

You are overthinking it. A free action is an action, just as much as a red car is a car.

I think I misunderstood what you were saying so never mind...

Ok Thnx LemonheadPrime and AnorDM for the quick answers.

And yeah I tend to overthink too much sometimes :) but now i'm even more hyped to fly the powerful Tycho into battle again :)

So besides not being able to pull a k-turn is there any other negative stress problems? Is there a game action that allows you to do something if your target has stress.

In Epic play, huge ships can take "Slicer Tools" that let them damage a ship with a stress token on it. The new "Stay on Target" card allows a pilot to change the maneuver they set on their dial but turns that maneuver red, so that would be bad on Tycho. There are also a few other cards that let you do something but then receive a stress token, but that specify "you can't do this if you already have a stress" so those probably won't work on tycho past the first couple turns.

There is a cool combo involving tycho, A-Wing test pilot, PtL. Experimental interface and Expert Handling that would allow him to do 3 actions a turn and gain 3 stress a turn and be silly maneuverable.

There's a few actions that involve a target with stress.

Bust mostly stress prevents you from making any red maneuver. It also prevents anyone other then Tycho from preforming any actions.

... but a car is not always a 'red' car.

I can't figure out why this subject always gives people problems. It's not a "free action", it's a free "action". A regular action beyond the one you get by default.

Because when you hear Free Action, it's easy to assume this means it's somehow different, less restrictive or otherwise different from a normal action.

It's honestly a poor choice in wording, because Free carries a given connotation for many people. Extra Action or something like that would of been better.

An action is an action, whether it's free or not.
Had to check to see whether or not PtL allowed you to use it when stressed...But, I see no problems. Tycho can really spam some actions.

Check the rulebook at the bottom of page 20 in the blue box - "Breaking the Rules"

A lot of upgrade cards are an exception to certain rules.

Thanks. Forgot that some of those cards state that.

Was just pointed out to me, the one named YT-2400 pilot, something Vrill, rolls an extra attack die against stressed ships.

Also, Damaged Engine would make Tycho's turn maneuvers red. Normally, if an A-wing takes a crit, it's almost dead anyway, but this one would be especially bad.

Eaden.

But note the difference between "if it's stressed" and "for each stress token"
