I was just wondering if the ability of R5-D8 (which has you discard a facedown damage card by rolling what is required) means removing the damage? I only ask because I couldn't find anything in the rulebook about discarding damage cards.

Yes. Damage is tracked by the cards, if they are discard then they are no longer attached to the ship and no longer count towards the max amount of damage they can recieve.
