cooleo paints

By cooleo1c, in X-Wing

Just got into this game. I've never done custom painting (of any kind) and was wondering if you could give me some advice.

Things I want to do:

- Bloodstripe on Tie Interceptor

- Blue Slave 1

- Custom tie paint job (not sure what yet. Can't find any alt. looking ties on google images besides the rebel ones)

What kind of paint, color, brushes, etc do I get? Thanks in advance.

For paintbrushes, smaller is better for details, and on most of the fighters thats what you're doing. My smallest paintbrush is a 6/0 liner, my largest is a #2 Flat.

For paints, I use any kind of acryllics I can get. Though some are definitely higher quality than others.

As for an alternate TIE paint job, how about this:

Masking tape is your friend, and the Foundation paint line from Citadel (now renamed to something else I believe)

I did the blood stripes on my first TIE Interceptor, which you can see it here:

I have done the Bloodstripes on 2 interceptors too, and they are easy, just put some tape on the fighter and paint the stripe with red color. I took the old Blood Red paint from Citadel. I also have modified a Falcon by taking off its rectenna and repainting all the red parts blue, just to distinguish them better

Btw they exchaned their whole **** paints recently which i find absolutely ridiculous. They wanted to force us to buy all new paints but i will just boycot them for discontinuing the old paints. Sure the new paints have a good quality but still i hope lots of people will do this just to punish them for their greed… I can't tell you which paints to use, although i like Prince August and the old Citadel paints (But there are other very good and perhaps even better brands). In any case buy acrylic based paints with a wide range for hobby, that's my tip

I have no flickr or similar account so i can't put the pictures on but for a beginner, try some unpainted models before you ruin your star wars miniatures, just so you have an idea what you are doing. Also for a beginning try brushes and not paintbrushes, since that might ruin your ships if you are inexperienced with it.

On youtube there is a step by step on how to strip an A-Wing of its paint and repaint it too, so check it out perhaps…

Justifying paint on Imperial Equipment is kind of hard to do because the Empire doesn't typically allow pilots to customize their equipment. It also doesn't help that the Empire treated fighters as expendable and discouraged attachment to individual ships.

I don't know though, if the Empire can let the 181st tradition of red stripes stand, they might have made exceptions for other elite units. I just think they were far less likely to style their ships as the Rebels do.

A lil careful masking, some red paint and time:

Soontir Fel TIE Interceptor Miniature

The "trick" if anyhting is to make sure the masking is very straight and very sealed to the wing surface. Take your time with it. It will take a long time. Do not be afriad to take the masking off and reapply to get it just right. Reapplying the masking is super easy. Fixing the paint afterwards, not so much.

The tape does not even have to be that tightly fixed, just ensure that your brush is not too wet, or the paint will expand under the tape…

I used a drybrush technique and got a neat result where the stripes are visible but a little transparent on the black parts, as that is what i also saw on some artwork pictures of Fel and Phennir.
